i use doom emacs and have the tab plugin installed, if i just double click the application file, everything works as expected, but if i start it with emacsclient, tabs just dont exist for some weird reason (also i am on a mac, if that helps)

Are you running emacsclient in a terminal?
When I ran emacs in a terminal I have to prefix the tab with a`g` for for `org-cycle`.
What does `C-h k tab` say?
