[ANN] Vertico 1.0 and Marginalia 1.0

minad-emacs · 2022-12-22 15:19
At the end of the year, I am happy to announce the stable [Vertico](https://github.com/minad/vertico) 1.0 and [Marginalia](https://github.com/minad/marginalia) 1.0 releases. Vertico is a minimalist, yet flexible and responsive vertical completion UI. Marginalia provides helpful annotations for many completion contexts. Both packages have been solid for a while but I rather let things mature slowly. These releases finally put the stamp "stable" on these two packages. I expect the other members of the package suite to follow soon after. Both packages have been updated recently to support the newest Emacs 29 features. They are compatible with Emacs 27, 28 and the upcoming 29. I got a lot of positive and constructive feedback over the last two years and the packages have seen some growing adoption in the community. This is all very encouraging. I learned about many different subsystems and packages through your feedback and given the ubiquity of completion in Emacs. Thank you, Emacs community! If my packages make your daily Emacs live better, please consider sponsoring me on GitHub Sponsors. I plan to develop and maintain my packages in the long term. I am the author of Vertico and Marginalia is co-authored by /u/oantolin and me. Take a look at [minad's sponsor page](https://github.com/sponsors/minad) and [oantolin's sponsor page](https://github.com/sponsors/oantolin). If you have questions or feedback I am happy to hear!

Thanks for your great work, I am really enjoing using your packages
tvaughan · 2022-12-22 16:08
Thanks for taking the time to add Vertico to Radian as well
hetzenmat · 2022-12-22 17:02
Thank you! I am a happy sponsor and will continue doing so.
hmelman · 2022-12-22 17:17
Thank you both for these packages. They quickly became some of my favorites. Also for your responsiveness in the development process. You've both spent a lot of time making emacs better for all of us and I really appreciate it.
ieoa · 2022-12-22 18:31
No questions but simply thank you! I started sponsoring this week too after I switched over.

Even before reaching a major release, your package is already, and deservedly, part of many, many distros - including my own [emacs-groundup](https://gitlab.com/public-repositories/emacs-groundup). Thank for sharing the fruit of your time and effort with the community <3 To any emacs-groundup users who might come across this: if you have already swapped company with corfu, pull requests are super welcome. I can't seem to find the time to do it :D
NoisyFrequency · 2022-12-22 22:31
I use them everyday, great job!
JDRiverRun · 2022-12-23 03:28
Such wonderful contributions you've made! And not just your excellent, purposeful, high quality packages, but, perhaps even more importantly, the ethos of setting high expectations for emacs internals and APIs, which will have long term benefits for everyone. I've learned a great deal from you in our many discussions. When I'm wondering "how should I do that complicated thing simply in elisp" I often browse through your .el files for an answer. Looking forward to corfu v1. If anyone hasn't yet tried corfu (or the recent corfu-popupinfo addition), it's "a must".
varsderk · 2022-12-23 03:55
Dang it, now I can't claim to be running as much beta software. ;-) Super happy to see these two absolutely critical packages hit the big `1.0` milestone. Well done, Daniel. Vertico is so nice to use, it's actually pushed me to use Eshell because I like how the completion works better than in zsh!
PhantomSeahorse · 2022-12-23 06:43
Super helpful packages, and I love their names! Thank you for your work
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 08:16
Thank you too for the helpful continuous feedback during the development, in particular for Consult, which you adopted quite early.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 08:23
Thanks! I only convinced Radon that going from Selectrum to Vertico is the right move. I had contributed to Selectrum for a long time when I realized that we would have to rewire the entire internals. Vertico and the other packages wouldn't be here without Selectrum.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 08:28
Exactly, that's the spirit. Your discussions and your contributions have been particularly valuable, in particular for Corfu. Corfu 1.0 will take a bit longer. Next in line is Consult. I also consider /u/oantolin's Orderless rock solid stable.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 08:33
You could still install everything from the bleeding edge. ;) This is what I use: (setq package-archives '(("gnu-devel" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/devel/") ("nongnu-devel" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/nongnu-devel/") ("melpa-devel" . "https://melpa.org/packages/")) package-archive-priorities '(("gnu-devel" . 2) ("nongnu-devel" . 1) ("melpa-devel" . 0))) Do you use Corfu or Vertico (via `consult-completion-in-region`) in Eshell?
grLng · 2022-12-23 10:13
Hi minad, since your packages use built-in Emacs features, are polished, used by many and will be maintained for the long-term as you wrote, wouldn't it make sense to have them added directly to Emacs?
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 10:28
It's a complicated topic.
wfsch · 2022-12-23 13:57
What is "[ANN]" in this context?
varsderk · 2022-12-23 16:52
> Install everything from the bleeding edge Mmm… I’m more or less doing that for Emacs itself, so that’s a good idea for all the packages. I’m using `consult-history` (which of course pairs with Vertico) and then for all other completion I’m using Corfu.
oantolin · 2022-12-23 17:02
Hey, you're back on reddit! Good to see you here. I think Orderless has felt finished to me for a long while now, I should tag a 1.0.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 17:37
Announcement
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 17:40
I recommend to go with the bleeding edge if you plan to actually help with development in the form of patches or feedback. See also `cape-history` as an alternative to `consult-history` for in-buffer completion.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 17:41
Hey, thanks! I am looking forward to Orderless 1.0!

Thanks for your outstanding work, Daniel.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 18:17
Thanks! That's great to hear coming from you.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-23 20:10
Thanks! Credit for "Marginalia" goes to /u/oantolin.
cradlemann · 2022-12-23 20:32
Thank you and /u/oantolin for such great packages
karthink · 2022-12-24 06:33
Thank you for the great, high-quality packages, Daniel. Your Elisp chops, design aesthetics, level of focus and responsiveness to input are something to aspire to.
minad-emacs · 2022-12-24 13:41
Thank you, Karthik, also for your thoughtful feedback during development. I remember our quick feedback loop when I made `vertico-unobtrusive-mode`. :)
doolio_ · 2022-12-24 18:06
Congratulations on the milestone. Your packages are making up a large part of my configuration so thank you.
