I am trying to learn cua again just because of that.

If you're on Linux, just get [XKeySnail](https://github.com/mooz/xkeysnail) - Emacs keys everywhere. There used to be a similar Windows tool, when I was unfortunate enough to have to use a Windows desktop - not sure if that still exists. I find that I'm already in 'alien environment mode' when I'm briefly on some random computer and I'm able to switch to the crippled standard CUA environments.

Thanks I'll give it a try

I was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite to be true when using terminal based applications. GDB for example, was made a lot easier when I noticed that CTRL+P and CTRL+N were my replacement for what I thought the arrow keys should be doing (in `--tui` mode). GUI programs, though? Thunderbird just about emails my printer every time - lol.

`CTRL S` not recommended in firefox :(
gusbrs · 2022-12-22 14:29
Try `C-w` when you almost finished filling that long form. :-D

I think that stuff even has keyboard macros and kill rings by virtue of GNU readline There was a really nice article on the mastering emacs website about it

I had almost the opposite experience: I was a Mac user before I started using Emacs. Mac's text editing shares a fair amount of shortcuts with Emacs: `C-a`, `C-e`, `C-k`, the direction keys, and I'm sure more. Prior to using Emacs, I thought this choice of shortcuts was some bizzarro decision by Apple or NeXTSTEP, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover how that muscle memory carried over to Emacs.

this is most crasy emacs key combination on mac-os with Meta=Command. Arghhh
SteeleDynamics · 2022-12-22 16:08
`C-n` keeps creating a new window, not scrolling down :(
sober_1 · 2022-12-22 19:28
Then suddenly MacOS
FFuuZZuu · 2022-12-22 21:50
incase you were unaware, ctrl-shift-t reopens closed tabs. not sure if it helps with saving progress on forms though lol

I stopped using bookmarks inside of browers when I couldn't do proper emacs keybindings anymore as my bookmarks started being full of Garbage.
TheGNUru · 2022-12-22 22:45
The only emacs keybind I use in other software is C-x C-c because opening anything else is not required (with the exception of another text editor.. that's the only place emacs is lacking)

I hear that. I'm still furious with Mozilla for killing their entire XUL extension ecosystem, with all of the blood sweat and tears that users had poured into it, because the `lazarus` extension for Firefox *completely* solved that particular problem (whether or not it was Emacs muscle-memory which triggered it). I used Pale Moon as my primary browser for a really long time afterwards just so I could keep using all the XUL extensions I'd come to rely upon; but eventually I just needed to be running something with a more-recent rendering engine, and had to give it up. https://github.com/stsquad/emacs_chrome helps a lot for single textareas (although I've now stopped *depending* on it successfully updating the copy in the browser because I've experienced failures -- which is an even *more* frustrating way to lose your text than if you weren't using that extension -- so I now have a habit of manually copying the buffer text in Emacs first, in case I end up needing to manually paste it). Once again, there was a better extension for this in the XUL days...

If the likes of https://github.com/mooz/xkeysnail/issues/43 are still a going concern then it's not quite as "everywhere" as one would like, and I *presume* that issue is a fundamental one (i.e. it doesn't sound like XKeySnail actually gets first refusal on key events, which would prevent it from remapping various things). Maybe they've fixed this though... are you able to say either way? (Edit: Aha, it looks like https://github.com/mooz/xkeysnail/pull/137 may have fixed this! Edit2: Er, but maybe that wasn't merged. Edit3: But it is included in that author's https://github.com/laech/xkeysnail fork.)

God I'm so used to C-SPC C-a C-w that I actually get annoyed when it doesn't work. It's just such a useful thing to have that it sticks in my craw every time I have to use a non-emacs editor.
donio · 2022-12-23 07:23
EXWM's `exwm-input-set-local-simulation-keys` let's you simulate the basics.
jctherik · 2022-12-23 09:44
C-w?
terminal_cope · 2022-12-23 13:18
Yeah, Firefox is still a problem for me with Alt. I say Emacs keys everywhere, but it is just the basics for me, but that's still good. I'll have to follow your links and see it fixes Firefox.
