That's what `vi` actually stands for - it's the VIsual editor (as opposed to `ed`, the non-visual editor).
Edit: in case it wasn't clear, `vi` is the traditional terminal-oriented editor for UNIX. `vim` was based on `vi`. Neovim is a project to create an improved `vim`.
