I disable the sidebar scroll and use mouse wheel only, I find the new scroll behaviour jarring as it scrolls too slowly. I'm guessing this is probably caused by smooth scrolling, the behavior seems to implement some type of acceleration functionality. How can I revert to the previous scrolling behaviour, whatever that was in emacs 28.x?

You mean `M-x pixel-precision-scroll-mode`?
EntertainmentCold932 · 2022-12-18 08:44
No, toggling that makes scrolling seem 'smoother' but I want the pre-emacs 29 behaviour back. Using the scroll wheel used to move half a page at a time, now it moves about one line at a time.

I'm not sure there has been a change? I just tried emacs28 -q and emacs29 -q and they both seem to scroll the same?

> Using the scroll wheel used to move half a page at a time,
I don’t think it did, that looks like a custom setting.

In my experience, scrolling has been incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes a couple of lines, sometimes entire pages. Like there's a cooldown between scroll ticks, and the amount scrolled builds up (quickly) and stays that way for a good number of seconds.
If anything this has been wildly infuriating as it makes scrolling quickly and precisely impossible. But if that's what OP wants... At least I've experienced it? Unless we've both lost our minds.

I’m not sure what your config looks like, but what you’re after is typically controlled but setting the `mouse-wheel-scroll-amount` in your config.
If its not already set, I highly recommend setting it to a value you’re comfortable with. Keep in mind though that you might need to tweak it between different computers, operating systems, and even different mice sometimes.

The Emacs scroll wheel has acceleration. This is how I configure it:
(setq
;; Disable mouse wheel acceleration
mouse-wheel-progressive-speed nil
;; Scroll 3 lines at a time, full screens while holding SHIFT
mouse-wheel-scroll-amount '(3 ((shift) . nil)))
/u/EntertainmentCold932 perhaps you need to tweak mouse-wheel-scroll-amount? Make sure you have pixel-precision-scroll-mode off, that one uses other settings for scrolling.
