Write slideshows with ox-spectacle

Charming_Habit_499 · 2022-12-11 07:12
For those who don't want to use PowerPoint and Keynote, and those living in Linux world, the best solution to write slideshows is basing on html5. There are reveal.js, impress.js and others, but I think [Spectacle](https://github.com/FormidableLabs/spectacle) is the most powerful. With this `ox-spectacle.el`, a spectacle.js backend for org export engine, you can make beautiful and powerful slideshow easily. To me, it's one of the best solutions to create slideshows. Enjoy it.

I'm very happy with the minimal style of org-present. It suits the nerdy content of the talks I give and I can switch from the slide to another buffer with code in it or an interpreter very easily. To distribute the presentation I use pandoc to convert to a beamer pdf.

I use pandoc, because I can specify a PowerPoint-Template and comply with the CI of my company.

I've used https://github.com/takaxp/org-tree-slide in the past. I'm a simple people.

I am using org-present too. It is most convenient in some scenarios. Give this a chance, you will find that browser-based rendering make it more beautiful and suitable for more scenes. What's more, this is very simple, a plain org-mode file export with `C-c C-e s s` and that's all.

I tried reveal now I am using beaver. The reveal problem is the sharing

Besides beautiful, the biggest advantage of the browser-based slideshow is that the exported html can be copied to any computer (even a mobile phone) with a browser installed for presentation. It is cross-platform and does not require the target environment to have Emacs installed. When you don't have such needs, org-present and org-tree-slide may be better choices.

off topic: how is it possible to use a ppt template? and is your source an org file?

I have been using Reveal many times for some personal presentations, Beamer for professional ones. I have never tried Spectacle. Why do you think that it is "more powerful"?

I've used both Reveal.js and Beamer many times, and they're both excellent. In my opinion, Reveal.js is very lightweight and convenient, and its biggest feature is that it is simple and practical. For me, its downside is that the extensibility is not very well, and the default themes or effects are not very satisfactory to me. So sometimes it takes a lot of code to implement some simple ideas, which is a bit painful. I love LaTex, I love Beamer, and in combination with tikz one can achieve unparalleled slideshow effects. However, I don't know if it's because I'm not proficient enough in using LaTex, I often get sidetracked by the syntax of LaTex when I use Beamer.Sometimes, creating a slideshow turns into playing with LaTex, eh... For spectacle, its biggest advantages and disadvantages are both because it is based on ReactJS, a javascript library that uses jsx and component concepts. Its disadvantage is that it is relatively difficult to get started, and it is not so lightweight. The advantage is that the component-based approach makes the encapsulation and extension of functions relatively easier, and the simplicity of the code is also guaranteed. In addition, many components existed in the huge ecosystem of React can be easily brought in for use. Spectacle provides a lot of out-of-the-box components, which makes writing slideshows feel like building blocks, is easy and fun. Create your own components and reuse them later is much easy too. This is all my personal thoughts. Not necessarily right, but absolutely true. Have a try maybe you will have your own answer.

The classic Linux emacs slideshow is latex/ps/pdf
Litanys · 2022-12-13 04:29
Huh... Would spectacle be similar to say, building a website using Hugo? I just got org re reveal setup today, and then saw this. Also does spectacle have a multiplex feature? Like I can send folks to a copy of my presentation and they can follow along on their phones? And their copy follows mine?

Looks awesome! However, I'd still go with reveal.js since with ox-spectacle you'll have to write lots of HTML code. I'd rather stick with org-mode strictly.
titaniumbones · 2022-12-19 18:48
org-re-reveal has a `single-file` option that will usually allow you to export everything you need in a shareable file.
titaniumbones · 2022-12-19 18:50
what's beaver? I haven't heard of it and it's a bit hard to search for!
asalerre · 2022-12-19 20:22
Ahaha sorry! It was supposed to be Beamer!
asalerre · 2022-12-19 20:22
Than you! I'll try it
