Merge branch 'feature/use-package' into emacs-29

ckoneru · 2022-12-09 04:07
Finally. Thanks for all your hard work. Emacs-29 release is going to have many desired packages out of the box.
varsderk · 2022-12-09 04:58
** massive applause erupts across the world **
Dang, Emacs 29 is gonna be *extra* lit. Let's see… what else is going into this release?
- tree-sitter
- eglot
- something about package.el installing from source optionally? yes?
- smooth scrolling (or was that a 28 feature? I've been running `master` for a while now…)
What am I missing?
_viz_ · 2022-12-09 05:20
Emacs can handle files with long lines without choking.
craftkiller · 2022-12-09 05:51
pgtk
sqlite
shaunsingh0207 · 2022-12-09 05:57
pixel smooth scrolling is indeed a 29 feature
ir210 · 2022-12-09 07:10
What I am excited the most is the improvement to the overlays. They will be as fast as text properties.
-xylon · 2022-12-09 08:50
Wasn't eglot part of emacs 28? I use 28.1 and eglot and I don't remember explicitly requiring eglot 🤔
torsteinkrause · 2022-12-09 11:31
Happy to see that included by default. It's a great addition to your `.emacs`
churchzebra · 2022-12-09 12:12
webp support
Ghosty141 · 2022-12-09 12:35
I really like how much of these features get merged into emacs. My biggest problem though is that now bugs etc. have to be handled via the emacs bugtracker and mailing list... which is atrocious compared to github.
vfclists · 2022-12-09 12:39
You can have as many separate `.emacs.d` profiles as you want.
No more `.elc` and `.eln` files across your doom installations clobbering each other.
`virtualenv` and `rbenv` anyone?
aard_fi · 2022-12-09 12:43
I looked at what it was yesterday after noticing it got added to git - and I can see why it might be interesting for some people. Though it looks like if you don't care about the delayed loading bits the added complexity makes just doing your own loader in ~20-30 lines of code the better option.
phr46 · 2022-12-09 12:58
Between this and package.el supporting git sources, it might be time to change my package management again... and since I'm shaking things I might as well try to put eglot instead of lsp-mode and then... ahhh... forget it. It's good enough already.
Hooray for backward compatibility! I'll just sit tight until things break.
aqua0210 · 2022-12-09 13:30
Now use the new `external-completion.el` in Eglot on Emacs 29.1, it will improve the performant of Eglot.

I personally thing it's worth it, but I agree that you do have to spend some time with the documentation to learn the DSL it provides.
jangid · 2022-12-09 16:10
It’s a preference. I like the mailing list interface.
luiggi_oasis · 2022-12-09 16:12
use-package is among my most favorite packages, I just love how largely my init.el improved since I started using it.
My only thoughts about the package? I sometimes have a hard time understanding when each :keyword is executed. It'd be nice if keywords, which have semantic names like :bind :config :init, would have aliases such as :always, :before-loading, :after-loading, etc.
I don't know anything about emacs development process, I just hope the concerns that integration might slow down maintenance won't manifest.
zacel · 2022-12-09 18:20
Next which-key or something similar to the core?
Ghosty141 · 2022-12-09 18:32
It's really annoying if you want to see if a feature has been requested already or a bug has been solved/found. Mailing lists make it way harder to quicky go through many reports.
Maybe I'm just not used to them though and there is a way it can be done more efficiently, if so enlighten me!
whale-sibling · 2022-12-09 18:51
> It's a great addition to your `.emacs`
`.emacs`? I bet you've got a grey beard. I'm saying you're old.
(Two years ago I removed some elisp to deal with problems on SunOS, that's pre-Solaris. I'm old too)
lispers-anonymous · 2022-12-09 20:21
You can try the bug tracker instead: https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/pkgreport.cgi?package=emacs;max-bugs=100;base-order=1;bug-rev=1
wasamasa · 2022-12-09 20:33
The best interface I've seen so far is the debbugs package on GNU ELPA. I just wish it had a less misleading description because it implements far more than just a library.
Ghosty141 · 2022-12-09 20:45
I know that one but it's far less intuitive and powerful than github issues for example. No tags, far less filters in general, more noise, I might just want to know issues about project.el for example or eglot. Sure you can include "eglot" in your searchc but that might turn up more issues that are not really interesting from a user perspective. Also the filters of debuggs behave a bit oddly, "emacs eglot" turn up far more than just eglot related issues.
nnreddit-user · 2022-12-09 21:56
It's a small research project every time I need to reopen, retag, merge or close a bug, to say nothing about citing and cross-referencing code.
It's also just re-skinned Gnus, of which I consider myself among the world's most advanced users, and even I can see it's dogshit interface-wise (but worth using for its emacs- and Turing-completeness).
dilap · 2022-12-09 23:48
wait seriously? that's amzing!
jangid · 2022-12-10 07:22
There are package specific mailing lists as well. For example org, auctex, gnus, erc. Each has a dedicated mailing list for discussion.
Stefan-Kangas · 2022-12-10 12:19
No, it was merged recently.
Ghosty141 · 2022-12-10 12:22
I'm not saying that mailing lists are really bad or smth, just that the more conventional modern "issue" style bugtrackers (like github/lab, youtrack, jira) are more intuitive and powerful than mailing lists.
Stefan-Kangas · 2022-12-10 12:26
I strongly recommend browsing the bug tracker using the `debbugs` package (use `M-x debbugs-gnu`).
jangid · 2022-12-10 12:54
There is a bug tracker but I agree that some kind of filter is required for packages.
Thaodan · 2022-12-10 14:40
The bugtracker works also quite nicely with debbug-mode.
Thaodan · 2022-12-10 14:41
The debbugs ui is quite bad if you don't use Email or Debbugs-Mode, I agree.
emacsguy · 2022-12-10 20:28
Thought I read somewhere., Emacs 29 on Windows will finally have double buffering, no more flickering!
ballfresno · 2022-12-12 16:09
How else does one specify the initial configuration? ;-)
torsteinkrause · 2022-12-14 09:28
> .emacs? I bet you've got a grey beard. I'm saying you're old.
In Emacs years, I'm only 23.
Thaodan · 2022-12-26 00:10
You did some improvement to it, they would be worth to rework so they can be merged.
For example your reddit backend shows these improvements to be useful.

About the inteface, I'd say that it just works different on could say outdated to what a user excepts however this is true in may areas of Emacs.
With a bit of rethought Gnus is quite usable.
Thaodan · 2022-12-26 00:11
That plus accessibility to other bugtrackers for example to Bugzilla would be so good.
So far I'm using bug-mode which is quite outdated and limited.
