Can Emacs be embedded in VSCode like Neovim Yet?

rdt-usr · 2022-12-07 19:37
In some software engineering environments, all users are forced to use VSCode either because of policy and/or a need to access specialized extensions that are only available in VSCode. Does a method to 'embed' Emacs in VSCode already exist yet? Or a bridge that can shuttle text between the two IDE's? [Extension to Embed Neovim In VSCode](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=asvetliakov.vscode-neovim) If not, since Emacs already has a client/server built-in, I wonder how difficult it would be to adapt this scaffolding to use VSCode as a 'client.'

Neovim was designed to be embeddable like that. The protocol is MessagePack but still specific to neovim. There is really nothing keeping you from having a file open in both VSCode and Emacs at the same time. Both editors will reload the file when it changes on disk, so its pretty seemless as long as you pay a little attention to the nuances of that.

What are some reasons to force the use of VSCode (or any specific IDE) as a policy? Just curious

Basically no. But you could run emacs in the vscode terminal, if you disable most of vscode's keybindings.

What would VSCode give you that Emacs cannot? Genuine question.

Heresy! But anyway, no, it's not possible. Better to convince them to let you use emacs for 80% of the things you do and vscode for the rest.

Sounds like an interesting approach that could be made to work. Was imagining though something more along the lines of this extension since VSCode is also based on chromium browser: [GhostText Extension](https://github.com/fregante/GhostText)

Most commercial extensions for VSCode that are designed to interface with proprietary engineering tools will likely never be ported to Emacs.

That's not a bug, that's a feature.
