Org Mode, Promoting Text Without Heading

PeppermintHipo · 2022-12-06 11:26
Hi Folks, hope everyone is well! I've been searching for some time to see if this is even possible in Org mode. It's so simple and hard to describe in searching that I've come up with nothing and it remains something that is keeping me from going all in on Org. Is there no way to promote a field of text in Org without a heading marker? 1. In the attached screenshot, I want the text with the arrow ("Promote this text...") to be promoted out of this double Subtree block to reside at the same level of text as if it were under History. 2. "text here" should remain under Subtree. Can this not be done or am I missing something simple? I have thought the same problem previously and ended up finding this [stackoverflow answer](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/30997099/in-org-mode-how-to-break-current-section-and-escape-to-upper-level). And as stated by the answer, this can not be done due to simplicity and compatibility issues

You can't.

Thanks u/coruscation_net \- as much as I'm sorry to see this, at least now I know why.

I think you could make it look like that with some hacking of org-indent-mode but the text would still belong to the subheading

One idea is to make a mode where headings with certain text are invisible (or abbreviated). Like maybe every heading with the text "#INVISIBLE#" is hidden (but the content's visibility follows that of the parent of "#INVISIBLE#"). Then you could use these "dummy headings" to promote text.

Reminds me of having TODOs in plain lists, one of the very few features that many would like the chance to have but it's not possible without much hackery.

These indentation are not in the source, it’s org-indent-mode. Only lists provide such functionality, headings are different semantically.
