Melpa is down, what's next?
dimitarvp · 2022-12-06 09:04
I checked that it's not my PiHole (with it on and off) and I also checked on my mobile connection. It's not resolving anywhere. Various down detectors have confirmed it.
Anybody knows what's going on? Is it gone for good?

Says it's up for me. Pinging it directly works as well.

5 minutes ago it worked, but I just tried and it seems to be down.

Same here, and someone opened an issue on the melpa github:
https://github.com/melpa/melpa/issues/8311

That was me. 😁

Melpa has been around for decades and if whoever it is stops hosting it, someone else will, or the community will pay to see it come back up.
Don't stress, this is almost certainly some glitch.

That same site now reports it as down

Why ‘is it gone for good?’ is nearly your first thought? Things go down, if its not up in a week or two you can worry but most likely up in no time. Even google and apple etc have bad days :)
dimitarvp · 2022-12-06 14:10
Mostly because it has been several hours. Usually servers come back in 15 minutes so I got a bit worried. :)
FrozenOnPluto · 2022-12-06 14:46
Depends on the issue and if admins and network guys are right there; like, if a disk fills and blows up a webserver application and you're you know.. sleeping, or at dinner or something, it can take awhile for you to notice :) .. or if theres a DDOS attack on yoiur host network, you coudl be down for a couple of days and not even have been the target. Etc etc..

Not the first time. Won’t be the last. It’ll be fine.

As an Emacs newbie i wondered if i was writing some invalid emacs-lisp, or using use-package wrong hahaha turns out melpa was down 😂

> Melpa has been around for decades
Depending on your definition of plural time periods?
Melpa is a little more than 11 years old. Emacs 24.1 was released just slightly more than one decade ago (2012-06-10), and Melpa's github repo pre-dates that release by a few more months (2011-10-05).

For the record, MELPA is up again. I noticed the downtime since I have some Atom feeds for ELPA repositories and got a few pings yesterday about the cronjobs failing.
