how to upgrade Emacs + Org
clispn · 2022-12-04 09:35
Am on Ubuntu 20.04. I wish to upgrade both Emacs and Org-mode. Emacs was installed using Ubuntu's Software gui. Org came with that Emacs installation.
I'm guessing the process would be; use Ubuntu Software to uninstall current Emacs, (perhaps delete the elpa Org directory and contents), then reinstall Emacs either using Ubuntu Software, or by sudo apt install.
Any thoughts or recommendations much appreciated.

Usually googling is faster than waiting for a response here. You have two options: a snap package or update the apt sources via ppa. I'd recommend the latter.
Quick guide here: https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/06/install-gnu-emacs-28-1-ubuntu-22-04-20-04/amp/

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot).
Maybe check out **the canonical page** instead: **[https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/06/install-gnu-emacs-28-1-ubuntu-22-04-20-04/](https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/06/install-gnu-emacs-28-1-ubuntu-22-04-20-04/)**

You didn't mention which versions you currently run and to which version you'd like to upgrade. That makes for a bit of guessing.
Caveat: I have been using Ubuntu for years, but never installed software via the Software Centre. Having said that, you can install the latest stable version of Emacs from the command line as a Snap: `snap install Emacs`. This will currently give you Emacs 28.2 if my memory serves me well. I don't remember which Org mode version came with that.

Currently, Emacs 26.3, Org-version 9.4.6
No, I would prefer not to use Snap or Flatpack. So, as I installed using Ubuntu Software, I will uninstall using the same method.
Found this at Stack Exchange on [how-to-install-latest-version-of-org-mode](https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/55324/how-to-install-latest-version-of-org-mode) But I will upgrade Emacs version first in the hope it finds a new Org-mode on the way.
Don't really want to use a 3rd party PPA to install new version Emacs. Don't really want to build compile it either.

May be ask in the Ubuntu reddit or groups as well?
Installing from source isnt that bad fwiw, provided you already have dependencies (so the build picks up the features.) Hopefully the uninstall doesnt then auto remove all the packages it roped in as depends..

My vote goes to ‘snap’ too, especially if you are not on the latest version of the OS. I’m on Pop!_OS 20.10 and just recently my “snapped” Emacs 28.1 has been updated to 28.2 automatically.

I think the flathub has Emacs 28.2

Thanks. Yes there's usually a test-run option for the makes to check the dependencies are all present.
You are right, I should ask in a Ubuntu group. There must be a simple recommended fail-safe approach, with no 3rd party PPA's.
Packages in Emacs seem a complicated beast to wrangle. What **should** we have for 'package-archives I wonder, for vanilla Gnu Emacs operation? I seem to have the following, and U update on package-list waiting waiting so something's not right.
`(("melpa" . "`[`https://melpa.org/packages/`](https://melpa.org/packages/)`")`
`("melpa-stable" . "https://stable.melpa.org/packages/")`
`("gnu" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/")`
`("elpa" . "`[`https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/`](https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/)`"))`
`Original value was`
`(("gnu" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/"))`

IIRC few authors update stable, so its very old and broken. The base branmch is what everyone pushes too daily, and what most peopel draw from, I think.

Good advice. Much appreciated.
