Deciding to rewrite init.el, and pondering over package manager
QueenOfHatred · 2022-11-29 17:09
So.
I decided to rewrite my init.el, as it has... grown a fair bit, in unstructured way, and decided to fix that.
And thought, while doing that, I might as well, try different package manager.
Can't decide whether to use straight.el, or elpaca.. they both seem nice #\_#

With emacs 29 you will get the inbuilt package-vc which will let you download from git repos or do version controlled downloads.
Of course you can use elpaca or what else but every package is built with package.el compatibility in mind so there is a large advantage for using package.el wherever possible.

May as well jump to Elpaca since you have the chance.

Many of the points here still stand:
https://github.com/radian-software/straight.el#comparison-to-packageel
Elpaca improves on straight in a number of ways as well.
Of the three I would say Elpaca's UI is the most flexible and powerful.
It makes it trivial to for people to make their own "ELPA".
For example, [Melpulls](https://github.com/progfolio/melpulls).
Of course, my opinion may be slightly biased.

I wouldn't recommend trusting these comparisons, sometimes they are not 100% accurate.

Some of the points need to be updated to reflect Emacs 29, but 29 is not the only version of Emacs straight supports and is still in the testing phase. Is there anything you find inaccurate or unfair? I'm open to suggestions.

>Is there anything you find inaccurate or unfair?
a bit
>straight.el encourages you to keep a tight handle on your package versions by default. **Quelpa encourages you to stick to the latest versions of your packages**, and to upgrade them automatically.

I do something similar to https://github.com/a-schaefers/spartan-emacs with package.el and I love it, honestly always had some issues with remembering use-package stuff

Been using el-get for a while now. Pretty happy with it.

Do you know where can I find more info about package-vc? Sounds interesting for replacing quelpa, which I only use for bookmarks+
Theres no entry in the manual yet (30.0.50)

Is there someplace I can read more about package-vc? Juggling multiple repositories with package.el is sometimes a nightmare.
Primary-Wave2 · 2022-12-01 13:23
I found some basic information in the emacs doc
C-h i under package.
Yes I will have to admit that the package-vc package was added without almost any documentation, which also was very frustrating to me.
