Why is 'standard-display-table' overridden by 'global-whitespace-mode'?

I came across this weird behaviour, here's how I got here: 1. (setq truncate-lines t) ; to truncate lines 2. (global-whitespace-mode) ; to highlight trailing whitespace 3. (set-display-table-slot standard-display-table 'truncation ?…) ; to change the truncation character from ; '$' to '…' Step 3. only seems to work when step 2. is off. I've tried this on both mine and stock's config, GUI and TUI and it doesn't change (see attachment) Anyone could shed a light on what's going on?

White space-mode operates by changing the buffer-display-table, which overrides the standard-display-table. Unfortunately I don’t use this and it wasn’t immediately apparent how to make your change work.
