It is named Emacs not eMacs!

I think autocorrect is partly to blame for this. My iPhone took a lot of repeated convincing not to autocorrect emacs everywhere and it still does it sometimes.

iPhones have all the reasons to autocomplete like this: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMac](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMac) ;)

**[EMac](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMac)**
>The eMac (short for education Mac) is a discontinued all-in-one Macintosh desktop computer that was produced and designed by Apple Computer Released in 2002, it was originally aimed at the education market, but was later made available as a cheaper mass-market alternative to Apple's second-generation LCD iMac G4. The eMac was pulled from retail on October 12, 2005, and was again sold exclusively to educational institutions thereafter. It was discontinued by Apple on July 5, 2006, and replaced by a cheaper, low-end iMac G5 that, like the eMac, was exclusively sold to educational institutions.

If I may interject for a moment - The editor you have been calling emacs is better described as <someOS>/emacs as in Windows/emacs or Linux/emacs. Emacs by itself is a capable user/OS interface but it still, at least for the near future, requires an underlying OS such as Linux or Windows, or MAC OS.
LOL Sorry
anaumann · 2022-11-25 22:24
It already is: GNU Emacs... as in: GNU/Linux, GNU/Hurd and GNU/kFreeBSD ;)
girvain · 2022-11-25 22:47
Ha yeah every time I post I get that shit. Interesting to know though.
kniebuiging · 2022-11-25 22:49
I still think calling it Emax is a missed opportunity.
verdigris2014 · 2022-11-25 23:09
My iPhone also insists on eMacs and it doesn’t seem like it’s worth my time to correct it every time. If it really upsets people and there is a simple one time fox I’d do it.
simplex5d · 2022-11-25 23:24
Emacs makes all computing simple.
crochet_du_gauche · 2022-11-25 23:44
iPhones autocorrect emacs to eMacs because there was a brand of Apple computer called the eMac a few decades ago.
It’s that simple.
thetemp_ · 2022-11-25 23:45
"Education Macros" :-D
anaumann · 2022-11-25 23:47
emacs is a life-long learning curve :)
andyjda · 2022-11-25 23:47
There actually is a relatively simple one-time fix:

(Just a tip since it seems many iPhone users aren’t aware of it 🙃)

I'm personally fond of EMACS - Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping
plm314 · 2022-11-26 03:49
Thanks! I can now spell Emacs as Emacs without having to correct my typing again.
HaveOurBaskets · 2022-11-26 04:42
Yes but you forgot to make it funny
ares623 · 2022-11-26 04:45
Actually...
MitchellMarquez42 · 2022-11-26 04:49
That's a good one.
sarmaq · 2022-11-26 06:19
Correct him, make it funny
centzon400 · 2022-11-26 06:33
When I picture a curve, I see a Cartesian plane. When I think of Emacs learning, I add in a Z-dimension and lots of little curves and waves--- like a bowl of spaghetti :)
I like pasta.
jeenajeena · 2022-11-26 06:41
I still get eMacs when using the swipe type keyboard. Really disappointing.
LordOfSwines · 2022-11-26 06:54
All one has to do is to tap "Emacs" after typing it correctly and ignoring the suggested correction once and it will remember Emacs after that. I assume people read what they are typing? :P
sunnyata · 2022-11-26 07:55

sunnyata · 2022-11-26 07:56
It doesn't though does it.
Mahdi_Amel · 2022-11-26 08:12
Imagine describing what GNU/Emacs stands for under this definition. Stack recursion overhead.
PhantomSeahorse · 2022-11-26 08:39
No need to get so heated over the name of eMacs!
verdigris2014 · 2022-11-26 09:37
Thanks for that. Settings general
Keyboard +. And now can we
Type
Emacs. Yep. Thanks

One of my new favourite quotes: "the ignorant will kidnap the term and change it's meaning"
It's already happened to hacker and troll and many others i'm sure.
dewyke · 2022-11-26 10:19
Mine has stubbornly refused to remember the correction but the replacement text trick did the job.
chmouelb · 2022-11-26 10:29
I am old enough to remember the swath of user asking apple eMacs questions when it was released on cmp.editor.emacs and everyone there was wth is this new aol wave
singularineet · 2022-11-26 19:50
The original name was, I believe, a pun. It was a set of macros on top of the TECO editor, so at the very first EMACS = EDITOR MACROS. By that logic, EMacs would be a reasonable spelling. But it was also part of Project MAC, and was reimplemented on its own. But even then, capitalizing the M would not be unreasonable.
