i thought it used to work, but national characters (~/.) don't work on files and not sure where to put .emacs or emacsrc..

I highly recommend that you use the app [termux](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.termux/) instead of that ancient build script. It has a fully functional Linux environment with a package manager and a home directory. It's got a helper package that lets you make custom shortcuts to programs or scripts.

Also nix-on-droid exists which combines the termux terminal with nix package manager. Worthy of mention are the various linux distro's for Android, which provide also a graphical desktop through vnc. I'm not satisfied with the result, but it could be my (non) setup's fault. While the phone is useful only for quick stuff and learning (I've built a small to medium back end for an in house web app in 2 weeks during bedtime though), a tablet with keyboard and optionally mouse and/or pen can be turned into a very nifty mini laptop with emacs. For example Samsung S6 lite, to be on the thrifty side.

The extra keys seem to have been chosen with emacs and vim in mind!
