I just installed Emacs using homebrew on mac and is excited to go on a journey learning this editor. Upon opening Emacs, I am greeted with an error of \`Invalid image type 'svg'\`. Is there something wrong with my installation and how do I fix this? Thanks!

Try using emacs -Q to open Emacs, and see if the problem still exists

\-Q made the problem go away. Thanks but what does the -Q do and why is does that error appear? I want to understand why it's happening

Looks like you ran into https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=59081 Solution: You need to upgrade to Emacs 29. It is not released, but should be available in one of the Mac builds (maybe someone using Mac can give details).

When you use this flag, emacs won't load any init files (e.g. config files). So I think there might be something wrong in your config files.

Or just because the "hello" buffer is not displayed, if my guess is correct.

Oh yes, this is the case. Because -Q also won't load the default spalsh screen, so I think OP's system lacks support for SVG image maybe?

oh this cleared things up. thanks!

Here's a good brew invocation that will compile SVG support for the fabulous emacs-mac port: `brew install emacs-mac --with-librsvg --with-emacs-sexy-icon --with-natural-title-bar --with-starter --with-mac-metal --with-imagemagick --with-native-comp`
