Is there a complete guide for setting up mu4e/mu/msmtp with multiple accounts that is up-to-date/works/and actually -responds- to email rather than just updating?? (30 hours in...)

So I'm going to start over. I've got mu4e working with reading multiple email addresses, I've got contexts I can send from, and I've got random bugs and gotchas that I'll never find in the rats nest of read-envelope-from sendmail-extra-arguments and other options. Bonus points if the guide explains what the options are doing.
All the guides I've gone through seem to run out of steam before actually sending and responding to email -- it's all... look, I configured IMAP... and for gmail cause that's hard. But responding to an email and automatically changing the from: based on the to:, etc are barely touched on. (currently my to: lines gets overriden by my from: lol -- the amount of side-effects from any change are massive).

TL;DR: **I'd love a** ***complete*** **guide for setting up multiple email addresses, that includes responding to emails and sending from the correct account with the correct .sig etc.** (The stuff generic clients do automatically)

Thanks. I've spent an ungodly amount of time on this. You'd think these packages would include 1 complete example that you could pair down to your needs, rather than parsing blogs from the last 20 years and seeing what still exists, what actually works, and then checking out the random bugs.

I'm working on a complete and detailed guide for this (and how to tie it into org), but it's some months away unfortunately.
I will need some willing ~~subj-~~ beta testers to give feedback though. So if you don't mind waiting you can email "mickey" at mastering emacs and I'll add you to the list.

Hello there,
I have writen down, what I think you need.
It should be able to work on mac and linux.
I am gonna take up u/mickeyp on his offer to see if there is not anything I can improve though.

This is the guide I followed to get things up and running. It's excellent!

I would definitely beta test this. Like the OP, I've also spent a significant amount of time on a half-workable setup (mu4e + davmail + offlineimap + O365 (with MFA) + msmtp). I'm in some sort of limbo between OrgMsg and org-mime.
I don't use mu4e contexts!

Not sure how I've missed this previously. Agree, it's great.

You can look into using the [gnus-alias](https://github.com/hexmode/gnus-alias) package for replying/composing with specific email addresses. I currently do that with `notmuch`. You'll have to read it's source as there is no README.

Mu4e is great when it works. I had it working until a few weeks ago, then it stopped working. I haven’t bothered to try and figure it out yet. It’s a bit of a pain to get set up.

May I suggest that every useful article that people know of be at least added to the list of links referenced at https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/mu4e for the benefit of future users who are liable to start there?
Comments to say what a given article covers would be nice as well, but let's at least have the URLs listed, as this stuff seems to come up a lot.

[(info "(mu4e) What are contexts")](https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/mu4e/What-are-contexts.html) and [(info "(mu4e) Contexts and special folders")](https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/mu4e/Contexts-and-special-folders.html) seem to be what you're looking for as far as that goes.
Yes this implies it's impossible to use mu4e for advanced features without coding Elisp, but you had probably already come to this conclusion by now.

Had you seen [this floating around](https://github.com/lordpretzel/mu4e-views), for rendering HTML mail? It seems to do what you're looking for.
[Irreal also mentions](https://irreal.org/blog/?p=9445) the outgoing scenario using [org-mime](https://github.com/org-mime/org-mime).

> The stuff generic clients do automatically
Just bear in mind that "the generic clients" have no *other* purpose, and likely teams of developers dedicated to implementing all of those things. It shouldn't be too surprising if a text editor which happens to have support for email isn't as easy to get configured.
> You'd think these packages would include 1 complete example
Perhaps the author(s) just didn't have your particular needs and/or things Just Worked for their purposes. (/speculation).
If you find solutions to your problems, be sure to contribute them back so that future users will have an easier time.

systemcrafters has a multipart video on setting up mu4e and sending emails using context, even orgmode integration is covered iirc.

Feel free to drop me a line. I'll note down your name+email.
mickeyp · 2022-11-21 07:44
Thanks. Nice tutorial, by the way!
FreeAd7233 · 2022-11-21 09:17
I would like to say a big thank to you! I learned setting up mu4e with msmtp and iSync by your tutorial several months ago. And this is just awesome. I love this shit deadly. Especially sending emails with different account in mu4e is just so easy… I had found that it was just not that easy using gnus…
aimebertrand · 2022-11-21 09:29
Well... I am glad i could help. It's the whole point ;)
