Any thoughts?

More documentation is almost always a good idea.

Personally I do not like modal editing, while I'm an ex hardcore Vimmer... So I still prefer my config, witch is far less tweaked and good than Doom, but it's far easier for me to change and debug...
ntn8888 · 2022-11-16 07:45
you mean you switch over to emacs for debugging? edit: sorry you were an EXvimmer!
thriveth · 2022-11-16 08:08
The Vim bindings on Doom are optional. You can still have other reasons to prefer your own config of course but you can totally switch off Evil in Doom.
ntn8888 · 2022-11-16 08:10
hmm maybe it's because i'm a fan of vim bindings. it feels easier and less clunky!
ntn8888 · 2022-11-16 08:12
also i think the which key complements evil mode; which feels electric ;)
thriveth · 2022-11-16 08:12
Oh I love them too - but /u/ftrx mentioned them as a reason to not use Doom and I just wanted to make sure they were were aware that they're optional.

ah!

It is good, but I’m not sure what value it has since this is all easily discoverable within the application the information is relevant. But it is great and I’m sure others will find it interesting and useful. For me `SPC :` is plenty.

it just to give a start.. i still found it overwhelming when i started ou..

This. I love doom, but I've found the community doesn't understand the difference between a reference and a tutorial.
artyhedgehog · 2022-11-16 20:52
> modal editing I've been using Doom Emacs without it - i.e. with vim settings and options _disabled_ from about when I started constantly using emacs (which is around 4+ months I believe - mostly org-mode, then magit and lately coding as well). Don't have any major issues with that. Did have some configuration issues like "I don't like this tweak that doom brought to my emacs", but nothing I couldn't bear or retweak in my own config.

> It is good, but I’m not sure what value it has since this is all easily discoverable within the application the information is relevant. But it is great and I’m sure others will find it interesting and useful. For me SPC : is plenty. you can just use `M-x` which is the emacs standard binding and possibly the only keybinding need to be remembered if you have to choose one. `SPC :` uses three key strokes and `M-x` just two. I am mixing vim and emacs style bindings. And I prefer the keybind that saves more key stroke and if the number of key strokes is the same, I prefer the one with less key chords

My point is you can get to that stage when you have developed a workflow. Other wise it'll be clueless, that's what happened to me when I just started. These cheatsheets were a lifesaver hinting that concepts to get you started. IMO this is all you need to be a basic workflow, from there on you could venture out...
ntn8888 · 2022-11-16 22:37
It's something for your first few days I suppose
oantolin · 2022-11-17 01:28
> maybe it's because i'm a fan of vim bindings What does "it" refer to in that sentence?
ntn8888 · 2022-11-17 01:31
Lol. When I get around it I'll produce a complete analysis report
ntn8888 · 2022-11-17 01:31
And for this comment too
oantolin · 2022-11-17 03:38
I wasn't trying to make a joke, I literally don't know what you meant in that comment. What did you mean?

Doom's core is pretty well-structured and nicely written. Even if I didn't use all the Evil stuff, or decided not to use any of Doom's official modules, I'd still use Doom. Its package management is solid. I like core macros like `map!`, `add-hook!`, `add-transient-hook!`, `defadvice!`, `cmd!`, etc. My config never had better sense and discoverability to me, I rarely need to scratch my head when something breaks, it's easy to find the culprit. I don't even use most of the included modules, but they still very useful; whenever I find a package I like to add, I'd check if it's included in one of the modules and see how it's integrated. Majority of modules I use are my own custom ones. I've looked through many personal configs and different starter kits: Prelude, Crafted-Emacs, Spacemacs, Corgi-Emacs and my subjective empirical observation is that Doom core macros cut down the boilerplate Elisp required for a decent configuration quite significantly, yet at the same time they are not problematic. They don't get in the way when you need to debug an issue caused by some package. I'd suggest one day to install chemacs2 (so you can do it alongside your existing config) and roll out a basic Doom config with no modules and try to configure some basic keys using `map!` and some elementary hooks with `add-hook!` (which allows you to add multiple functions to many hooks at once). A lot of people like Doom (and for the good reasons), and lots of them are not even into modal editing at all.

If you're new to the hacker community, I recommend reading this guide to help you understand its norms: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html Especially, see the section titled, "Use meaningful, specific subject headers."

I've been here for a while. Got 500 too? I'd for take some thumbs up. What more could you want?
