I started using emacs (doom; evil-mode enabled) on macOS and I am using the international US-layout. When I write German I can usually type “option-s” to get an “ß”. I emacs “option-s” becomes “meta-s” and therefore I have a problem.
The only way I found so far is typing ‘c-x 8 “ s’ which is really cumbersome. Is there some better way I could utilize?

I’m using the German input method: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Select-Input-Method.html.

You can set the right alt key to work as AltGr. The variable is called ns-right-option-modifier

`AltGr+s+s` in `~/.XCompose` ?
`<Multi_key> <s> <s> : "ß" ssharp # LATIN SMALL LETTER SHARP S`

I don’t want to do that because I want special characters at their cozy places in the US-layout

Thanks. I’ll have a look at that

.XCompose when I am not using X but Aqua (is that still the name of the DE from Apple)?

Since I do not know OSX I can't answer BUT a still cumbersome though easier way might be using abbrev or aas like
(use-package aas
:hook (LaTeX-mode . aas-activate-for-major-mode)
:hook (org-mode . aas-activate-for-major-mode)
:config
(aas-set-snippets 'text-mode
;; expand unconditionally
";ss" "β"
"/o" "ø"
"/O" "Ø"
";->" "→")
The issue is that you have to type `;ss` to get `β` or have ALL `ss` replaced by `β` while typing witch might be ok in German but not in other languages...

That sounds like a good solution as well. I can use ;ss — we have ss as well in the language
