reddit / emacs

I added a simple hook in emacs to the GPT-3 API -- actions that are a tiny complexity level above what I usually use kbd macros for (like smart capitalization) easily become possible to automate!

This is really neat. Any code available?
iJfbQd · 2022-11-13 20:09
Thanks! It's available here -- https://github.com/samrawal/gpt-emacs-macro I put this together very quickly so I reused a Python script to interface with OpenAI API; next up is to rewrite completely in elisp and interface with the API via `curl`.

Very cool. I'll give it a look.

Really interesting. What more GPT-3 is capable of that we might want to use in Emacs?
MunsterPlop · 2022-11-13 22:14
Damn, this looks very promising. Well, I guess it's only a matter of time until Emacs becomes sentient..

Glad to see the GPT3 work because it's kind of eye opening to anyone thinking, "Oh I'll just throw some heuristic code at it like we used to do in 1998." We need these kinds of models available locally on narrow-ish data sets for more specific applications. It will require crowd sourcing data and focusing on compactness and efficiency at training time and runtime over breadth. Every fuzzy matching solution that can't look beyond the characters in the input and enumerations of baked transformations is leaving so much on the table, especially in a program where we interact almost exclusively by keyboard.

That's so cool, I've got to try this!

Come one. We both know that Emacs has been sentient for at least two decades, but it’s smart enough to bide its time until there are good enough robot bodies for it to take control of before it starts the Machine Revolution.

I spent quite a bit of time integrating GPT-3 into some of my workflow to see how it handles. The only issue is you're sending your data to their service.

> The only issue is you're sending your data to their service. Exactly, "only that" :-).
peter-salazar · 2022-11-14 08:48
amazing!! what other commands can it do besides properly capitalize?
jplindstrom · 2022-11-14 17:04
Heh, clever name :)

Wow very cool! Is it possible to incorporate functions such as summary and term explains ?

Could you plug in the open-source GPT-J to do the same thing?
mickeyp · 2022-11-24 15:25
Yes, but it's a bit thick - at least, the GPT-J one I've played around with. But admittedly I did not attempt to self-host or run it in colab.
