Mastradon seems fun, what instance are all the emacs/programmers at?

They are scattered but plenty of them around (see folks I’m following in link above). Also check out some of the instances where the above folks are. Another instance to consider is https://fosstodon.org.

Mastodon is not a popular network though.

There’s a bunch of movement at present because the blue bird situation. I was delighted to find lots of emacsers on Mastodon with a diverse background. Now may just be the right time to ignite the Emacs discussion. If you’d like to see a vibrant Emacs community, come along and do your bit ;)

Out of curiosity, does the *.ch indicate a chinese server?

"The blue bird situation" is FUD. What exactly has changed on Twitter that makes the people run in circles, screaming? "Oh no, the new owner is another rich dude"? Nah.

It seems likely that there will be more spam and tweets by people you are actually connected to will be buried under those from people who have paid.

Regardless of what we’d like to attribute it to, Mastodon has received a bunch new users over the last few weeks. May be the a chance to ride the momentum and further engage. I’ve been on Twitter for over a decade and have experienced fairly low Emacs activity. I’ve rejoined Mastodon recently and was delighted to find lots of emacsers. I’d love for discussion to take off even if it is for a niche but active Emacs community. For me, that’s still a great win.

How many of them will still be active in 2023?

Yes we'll have to wait and see won't we. Mastodon seems like a good thing either way. Better to use free software and better to be decentralised.

Mastodon has a "Groups" feature, so I don't know whether an Emacs group might be a good idea. In any case, the #Emacs hashtag is an easy enough way to locate posts and users, and Sacha Chua just resurrected her #EmacsLife bot. Between this, and all the Emacs users I'm already following, it's easy to connect and stay in touch.

Metcalfe's Law … those of us on Mastodon have /definitely/ noticed a sea change in the last 2 weeks. It is absolutely viable as a birdsite replacement as of now, and will only get better the more people buy in. Decentralized social media is a winner, ActivityPub is good.

There was also a lot of Signal account created as a backfire of new Whatsapp policy.

What is that?

That's good, I guess. WhatsApp wasn't secure last week though.
