What does it do that `reveal-mode` does not? Reveal's used in authinfo files by default to cloak the password field.

it allows to have different regex per major mode, for example a specific regex for \`envrc\` files and another one for \`restclient.el\` files, that's the use case I needed a solution for

reveal looks for overlays: provided you write the right regexp to hide what you need, reveal-mode will work with it. It's as buffer-local or global as you want it to be. See `authinfo--hide-passwords`.
