how does elisp compare to common lisp?

plsstobanninmeffs · 2022-11-06 16:39
I heard that the gccemacs branch was merged a while ago so that elisp is now natively compiled and i wanted to know if there are any benchmarks on any speed improvements against common lisp (say on sbcl).

I have neither knowledge nor much experience in this regard. Bur I wouldn't expect elisp to be anywhere near sbcl speed.

Emacs Lisp uses libgccjit for its native compilation. CL has an implementation called Clasp, which uses LLVM-powered JIT compilation. They are close in single-thread performance in my test, but both are far (about 10x) slower than the fastest CL implementation (SBCL).

Any idea where clojure ranks in?

Due to the excellent JIT compiler of JVM, Clojure performs at the same level as unoptimized CL code running on SBCL, which is also much faster than Emacs Lisp.
