Automatic-rescheduling in org-agenda?

Spyname149 · 2022-11-06 10:52
I love the universal plain-text environment that Emacs offers, it helps a lot when I have a million things on and get easily distracted. I find that time-blocking my days through org-mode and org-agenda helps a lot to balance all the aspects of my life. But with that, I would love to find a way that when I have to reschedule an event, Emacs would automatically reschedule everything else, e.g. due dates, time allocated, difficulty. Basically, I'm asking for SkedPal (https://skedpal.com/) as an Emacs mode. I hate to pay continuously for software and would love to stay within the Emacs ecosystem, but this is on the point of me desperately needing any possible solution. What's the best way to do this? Is there something already available? Could I learn Elisp and code it myself? Would someone be willing to code it?

I read the skedaddle website briefly. So your question is about auto scheduling? What would the workflow look like?

I have looked into this kind of solution (maybe not exactly, see note below), but could not find an existing one. I'm actually thinking of writing my own package that performs some automatic scheduling with org. It would be really helpful for me if you could describe your use case a bit more: How would you imagine this thing working? What problem would it solve exactly, and how would you know that the solution worked? Note: My idea was an org module that automatically scheduled time for your task, if it was given an effort property. (Other factors like already scheduled tasks, working time in a day, and due date would also be considered). Basically, you tell org how long you think something takes, and it would suggest a time for you to do it.

AFAIK the closest existing functionality is Org Agenda's "scatter" command. But it's very simple; it doesn't try to be smart about time allocation, effort, etc. Such a tool would be rather complicated, but Emacs and Org would be a natural platform to implement such a thing, so...have at it! :)

Does Org-Mode even have a way to keep track of free/busy times?
Spyname149 · 2022-11-07 19:47
For me, I would have my standard org-mode file set up with deadlines and scheduled times. If I had to schedule something at the same time, it would automatically change the lower priority task to another time or day, assuming of course the deadline is fine. I'd probably have to add in deadline, estimated effort time, and priority to each agenda entry, but that's fine by me. In the next coming months I will be both a student and running a business, so two possibly conflicting and busy schedules. So I would like for there is to be a system that integrates into Emacs and allows me to notice any clashes, as well as ensure that all my tasks get done before the deadline. It's useless to me if I have a bunch of tasks still left as scheduled for yesterday if I don't have it timeblocked for another time. Timeblocking also helps with my procrastination and decision paralysis. If I can wake up, and I have my schedule for the day sorted, then that's amazing. I go throughout the day, following as close as I can to the schedule. If I complete things on time, then I mark as DONE and move on. If something isn't marked as done by some time after the scheduled time (e.g. after an hour or a day) then it reschedules it to an empty slot in my future calendar. If I add in a newer, higher priority event that is at the same time as another event, then it would also reschedule it to an empty slot. I am desperate for this kind of solution, so if you do come up with something please let me know! I'd be excited to have it in my init-file 😂

I'm not sure, but the org agenda would definitely need to have some sort of recognition of what times are not being currently used by a task, right?
Spyname149 · 2022-11-07 19:51
Yeah I would describe this as maybe 'halfway' to what I'm looking for, but it would also need to account for times rather than days. Also the ability to recognise empty slots and allocate tasks to them, and detecting clashes.
danderzei · 2022-11-08 01:16
Seems plausible in Elisp but I can't think of an e siring package that would do this.
