Has anyone got emacs running on Windows 10 without fatal errors?
rhabarba · 2022-11-04 01:40
Both Windows 10 and Windows 11, identical `init.el` files. Using the official builds. Which kind of error do you experience?
nv-elisp · 2022-11-04 01:46
I've used it on Windows 10, but I got crushed by a falling piano shortly after.
harunokashiwa · 2022-11-04 02:03
If you are using kiennq's emacs 29 build, try an earlier release.
rhabarba · 2022-11-04 02:06
Not the OP, but: Thank you, I did not know these builds until just now. :)
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-04 02:08
I think I fixed it myself. Apparently I had to start up powershell in admin mode and enter:
setx HOME %USERPROFILE%
<sarc> I mean isn't that so eef'n obvious? <sarc>
Edit: no that did not work. I tried to use mapis packages and got so many fatal errors I couldn't close them all.

Fatal
Wolandark · 2022-11-04 02:28
I installed for a friend with scoop. was fine afaik
trivialBetaState · 2022-11-04 02:41
I use vanilla EMACS on my w11 PC at work which used to be w10. In both cases, EMACS runs fine.
However, I don't have all my packages from my linux PCs. Not sure if that would make a difference.
PS. It's soooo boring working with windows.
hungry_m8 · 2022-11-04 03:11
yes. using v29.0.50
HilbertInnerSpace · 2022-11-04 04:21
just run it on WSL
jxfreeman · 2022-11-04 05:21
While that works, (I have it installed on my Ubuntu WSL) the downside is it’s terminal-based so you lose the font fun. I also have it installed on Windows, and it seems oddly slow by comparison.
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-04 06:38
It works, but its an older version.
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-04 06:41
No. Even more fatal error dialogue boxes.
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-04 07:04
I went back to 26.3. No errors
MunsterPlop · 2022-11-04 07:38
You can run it graphically just fine with something like vcxsrv.
Emacs is slow on windows in big part due to I/O operations (thanks ntfs).
synchromesh · 2022-11-04 07:44
I’m running 29.0.50 as well, built in an MinGW64 environment. Certainly no fatal errors at runtime.
ruscaire · 2022-11-04 08:19
Yes but it’s never quite right. Ended up running it under WSL2 and that’s quite nice
JohnDoe365 · 2022-11-04 08:28
Most certainly, I use the bleeding edge from [https://github.com/kiennq/emacs-build/releases](https://github.com/kiennq/emacs-build/releases)
The builds there have always been great. Recent changes to overlay code are buggy though so please use build https://github.com/kiennq/emacs-build/releases/tag/v29.162.20221017.1251342
drakxtwo · 2022-11-04 13:53
Use vanilla 28 & 29 though back to v28 daily on locked down win10 works machine mainly for org though some python. No issues , never had a fatal error. Init.el is quite complex and lots of package add ons such as beacon, modus etc
eis3nheim · 2022-11-04 14:32
I have been using Emacs on Windows (running locally) for almost 2 years now there is nothing wrong with it.
Your question is vague and misleading, check your system because it's 100% faulty.
oantolin · 2022-11-04 14:41
Yep, I use the binaries from the [GNU Emacs website](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/download.html#nonfree). I've been using it for years without any trouble and am currently using 28.2.
arthurno1 · 2022-11-04 15:12
I have been using gnu binaries from their ftp since it was called nt-emacs, back in what it was, 1999 or 2000, something there around? Since like 5-6 years or so, I compile my own from the git sources, and it works fine too, though since last year or so I see enormous degradation of performance, about 10x compared to what I get on Linux. I don't know why, but it works fine, no errors and such. I don't use WSL.
Michal_Atlas · 2022-11-04 19:32
The Winget version ran fine
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-08 19:49
Tried it. Still get problems. Not bothering anymore. Just using geany or vscode
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-08 19:51
Versions 27.2 and older run fine. 28 and 29 do not - constant fatal error dialogue windows.
Not bothering any more. I'm using either geany of vscode.
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-08 19:53
I did a fresh install only 2 months ago. No other software gives me problems, and as for checking system - no virii, no alerts, memcheck is fine. Versions 27.2 and older work fine.
oantolin · 2022-11-08 22:16
That's unfortunate. Please consider filing a bug report.
hkjels · 2022-11-08 22:27
I haven’t gotten any fatal errors, but it feels sluggish and a bunch of packages are not working. I switched jobs a month ago and came from a flawless setup with macOS, so I’m kind of having a hard time with the switch. I’m going to try to run a Emacs server in WSL and the client from Windows next
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-09 23:40
I get downvoted because emacs has errors?
not-the-droid- · 2022-11-09 23:44
How is it misleading? I do get fatal error dialogue boxes opening up, constantly and without letup.
