Using Emacs' project.el with Git Submodules

It isn't clear to me how to add new projects to Emacs' native project concept. In my case, my Emacs init files is a git repo with submodules for each package that I'm using. I have the main repo added as a project but when I go to a submodule, Emacs thinks it is part of the main repo but I'd rather have each be their own separate project. Has anyone dealt with such a situation before?

There's a variable that causes submodules to be merged into the main one. You can try setting it to nil -> project-vc-merge-submodules.
