I am trying to rename init\_bak.el into init.el via dired rename (R) but I am only given the existing \_bak file name rather than being offered a way to give it a new name. How can I disregard the suggestion here and type in a similar (thats why its matching) but different file name?

with ido I could always hit C-f once more to do that, but that does not work here

Just press up arrow(↑) to select your input and then press enter(⮐).
It is a bit non-intuitive, but that is how it works.

In `dired`, "Rename file" command is actually "Move File".
You can actually use `wdired` to rename file, see https://www.masteringemacs.org/article/wdired-editable-dired-buffers

See `icomplete-fido-exit`.

so you suggest binding this function to a key then?

It should be `M-j` by default. Anyway, `C-h f` or `describe-function` is your friend.
