High-contrast light theme, specifically [Modus Operandi](https://protesilaos.com/emacs/modus-themes-pictures). Light themes aren't a problem for me since I don't sit in a dark room 24/7 and text antialiasing was terrible on a regular low-DPI monitor with dark themes.
Kind of moot now having a 4K display, but light themes stuck with me out of habit.

Second this. Started using it recently, it is a relief, for someone with cross-eye and nearsighted conditions (like me). I like the aesthetics of many dark themes but I cannot use them effectively without forcing my eyes to read text, even in Hi-DPI screens.

Medium contrast dark theme (gruvbox with my own mods for org-mode). It's higher contrast than Solarized but lower contrast than Modus.
I'd count something like Spacemacs-dark and doom-one (also favorites of mine) in the same "medium" category.

I think light themes work better for people with some eye conditions because the light causes the pupils to contract, improving focus. As my astigmatism and nearsightedness has gotten worse light themes have become the only way for me.

I use a high-contrast dark theme that I found for vim originally. I think it's unfortunate that the vast majority of dark themes are low-contrast, because they all look the same to me. Maintaining your own theme shouldn't be necessary at all, but I just can't find anything with the right pallete.

This is the way. I picked a dark background with lots of colour, then customized it for contrast where I like it. I also think high contrast (say white text on black background) is hard on the eyes .. all the way since the 80s (Amiga white on blue was a nice guide), but I tend to use yellow on brown or white/purple on dark blue, that sort of thing. For contrast, orange and red pop on dark blues pretty nicely..

I appreciate the inclusion of contrast. I switch between solarized light and dark.
sch0lars · 2022-10-31 22:17
I love the [gruvbox dark](https://github.com/greduan/emacs-theme-gruvbox) theme.
vaxdar · 2022-10-31 22:21
I switch between high contrast light and dark themes (both modus) so...
pedzsanReddit · 2022-10-31 22:49
I don't use themes 😭😢😹

I've used medium contrast dark themes for a long time. But now that I've started using glasses, I'm migrating towards light themes. My glasses block a little bit of blue light, and some dark themes just don't look sexy now.
There are some studies in the internetz that indicate light themes (black letters on white background) are way better for readability and less tiring than dark themes (white letters on black bg). I've experimented on various sites and applications, such as Osysee, Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, Gnome Shell and indeed, light themes are way better. No wonder printed books use white/creamy paper.
But in Emacs and Vim, I feel like dark themes are not all that bad for readability since we have syntax highlighting with varying colors and bold letters. Not to mention, reading a piece of code is very different from reading a paragraph in a book.

[ef-themes](https://protesilaos.com/emacs/ef-themes) ef-light one has been fantastic for me. After using dark themes for some years I switched to light ones and my eyes are happier. I tried modus-operandi for a while but the white background was too bright for me
xbmarx · 2022-11-01 00:04
Same. I rock the default theme like a boomer.
your_sweetpea · 2022-11-01 05:26
I adore ef-summer. Having a higher contrast theme I actually think looks good is a godsend, most of them just look subtly "off" to me.
lisploli · 2022-11-01 06:30
I absolutely love what prot does with those themes. I recolored half my desktop to fit with ef-autumn just before ef-cherrie hit last week.
Before those I used modus-vivendi and made the background slightly lighter to keep the contrast in check. He talks a lot about maximizing contrast, but I feel like there is a personal sweetspot somewhere between those standards.
One other thing I noticed is that a bright image in a dark environment is A LOT more annoying than a dark image in a bright environment.

I use a slightly modified version of the [Word Perfect theme](https://emacsthemes.com/themes/word-perfect-theme.html).
CorysInTheHouse69 · 2022-11-01 07:07
Still a theme though

I'm used to dark themes. Recently I switched to Modus-Vivendi, before I was using ir-black which kinda got old.
I'm not sure but I would say it is high contrast?

Tango-dark for me. Fully black backgrounds are painful but the dark gray like tango-dark or gruvbox is pleasant.
dargscisyhp · 2022-11-01 14:07
It's beautiful!
aqua0210 · 2022-11-01 14:08
I tried different themes, including the `default`, `color-theme-sanityinc-tomorrow` ,`modus`,`doom one`and so on.
My favorite is the `color-theme-sanityinc-tomorrow-bright`, the High contrast dark theme of [color-theme-sanityinc-tomorrow](https://github.com/purcell/color-theme-sanityinc-tomorrow) , I has been using it for 3 years. Thanks Steve Purcell for making this nice theme.
OldMansKid · 2022-11-01 15:00
Tried quite a few themes, in the end Leuven is the best for me. Don't understand why folk prefer dark themes. I heard that light background is better for the eyes.
ExploringDuality · 2022-11-01 15:27
These themes look spectacular! Kudos to the author!
Org2Blog75 · 2022-11-01 16:55
> Leuven
Exactly it comes built in, easy to read, supported all over the place, and so easy on the eyes! :)
`(load-theme 'leuven)`
yep808 · 2022-11-01 20:48
Spacemacs-light theme is recently my favorite -- the slightly-off-white-cozy-beige background is just.... (chef's kiss).
oantolin · 2022-11-02 05:36
I use high contrast themes: light during the day and dark at night. What am I supposed to answer?
brandflake11 · 2022-11-02 21:14
I use the Dracula theme, just like I use for everything: https://draculatheme.com/emacs
If I'm outside, I use the excellent built-in whiteboard theme, which I really like when I'm in a light mode mood.

I use ewal to automatically generate a theme based on my current wallpaper.
