I’m trying to start isearch from a function call. I want that function to set the starting string of isearch and go ahead and start `isearch-mode`. I thought it would be as simple as `(isearch-forward “example string”)` but this doesn’t seem to work? Any thought?

In your function, you can add a function to `isearch-mode-hook` that sets variable `isearch-string` to what you want. And your function can remove that hook function when done.
(defun foo () (setq isearch-string "the"))
(add-hook 'isearch-mode-hook 'foo)

Thanks but I think I found an even easier way.
`(isearch-resume “example string” nil nil t “example string” nil)`
