I decided to write a [blog post](http://alhassy.com/arabic-roots#Arabic-Input-Setup) about Arabic's system of patterns and realised that, like all of life, Emacs is the perfect tool. (The htmlized source is [here.](http://alhassy.com/arabic-roots.org.html))

Very nice looking results!

Awesome!

The `farsi-transliterate-banan` is incredibly cool. I thought this kind of input method was only used in for Kanji! I also love the tooltips you added on `toggle-input-method` and `org-deflink` :) My main struggle with Hebrew in Emacs is that I want to write my Org notes in Hebrew _and_ English, because some of them are technical. So I found that these settings decide the line orientation based on the first character of the line/paragraph: (setq bidi-paragraph-direction nil bidi-display-reordering t) Also had to use this trickery to switch the evil movement direction: (map! :map org-mode-map :n "l" (cmd! (if (equal evil-input-method "hebrew") (evil-backward-char) (evil-forward-char))) :n "h" (cmd! (if (equal evil-input-method "hebrew") (evil-forward-char) (evil-backward-char)))) I'm sure these's a slicker solution for RTL, but these have carried me quite far :P

I've been looking for a way to do this for Arabic on Emacs. I never would've guessed that this farsi input method would be handy. Thank you for sharing.

That is really cool, I love it.

I have one question, how do you write in Org-mode, I tried your configuration, and it works great but when it's in org-mode the writing is shifted towards the left. How do you make it from right to left in org-mode?

I don't know; maybe it's the default. Perhaps u/sarit-hadad-enjoyer's answer [above](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/ydoba2/comment/ittw0eb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) is helpful.

This is excellent. I studied Arabic a couple decades ago and haven't really used it much since and have recently been thinking of re-learning. I read your blog post and so much came rushing back, now I'm going over the Emacs part. Great post, great references, great work! Thanks! Edit: شکرا جزلِیا Oh yeah, transliteration is so much easier than learning a new keyboard layout.

I used to use the phonetic transliterate method of typing, mainly because I didn't have Arabic keys and the default Arabic layout is a mess. But there are many other layouts to choose from. I have switched to the [ErgoArabic](https://github.com/darkstego/ergoarabic) keyboard layout. I can now touch type Arabic. While my typing speed isn't as fast as my QWERTY typing it is still plenty fast for what I need and I can use it everywhere. There is even a [website](https://6xq.net/%D9%84%D8%A4%D9%84%D8%A4%D8%A9/) going over all the different layouts. Also, the link to the typing practice site is dead. I would also suggest monkeytype for arabic (and all other languages) typing practice.

Any more details on how `[[card:]]` works? صلاة الله وسلامه على أمير المؤمنين

Perhaps you did not see the [Elisp implementation near the bottom/end](http://alhassy.com/arabic-roots#org716e36f) of the article? If you did, was there anything confusing about it? لا فتی الا علي

I just wrote a follow-up, in-case you're interested. It's more of a ["brutal" introduction to Arabic Grammar/Syntax.](http://alhassy.com/arabic-word-order)
