Build problems on MacOS Ventura?

shaqfooVA · 2022-10-25 16:52
Made the foolish mistake of early adoption of MacOS Ventura. Looks to me like the new OS breaks libgccjit and therefore native comp. Is anyone able to compile on the latest MacOS? So far, I've been unable to link the libgccjit hello world: [https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/jit/intro/tutorial01.html](https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/jit/intro/tutorial01.html) The farthest I can get is to the following errors: gcc-11: warning: could not understand version '13.00.00' ld: -rpath can only be used when targeting Mac OS X 10.5 or later collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status At which point, it seems as if the problems are inherent to gcc-11 in combination with MacOS's ld. Anyone able to make this work?

Your Mac is intel or apple silicon based? I downloaded emacs 28 using `brew` on macOS Ventura. Intel based Mac.

Some of us crazies want to build `master` on Apple Silicon. Homebrew, while awesome, won’t cut it here.

https://github.com/d12frosted/homebrew-emacs-plus#about $ `brew install emacs-plus@29` # install Emacs 29 (master)

Ooooh… I stand corrected.

The emacs-app-devel (Emacs 29) MacPorts port built for me successfully on macOS 13 yesterday. You’ll need to make sure you have Xcode 14.1rc2 and the Command Line Tools for 14.1rc2 installed.

I learned hard on Big Sur not to do this until a few months after general release, it destroyed my yabai config and I was lost for like a month
The_L_Of_Life · 2022-10-25 23:17
Seems like this user fixed it using gcc-12 instead of 11 https://github.com/Homebrew/discussions/discussions/3490

I learned hard after High Sierra. Apple software has become a dumpster fire.

I had to remove `CommandLineTools` and then reinstall them. I vaguely understood that it was somehow shadowing the appropriate version of `llvm`. I also had to make sure I had `llvm@12` installed. ``` sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools brew install llvm@12 ```

To be fair yabai literally injects code into Dock.app -- necessarily a fragile procedure that's not going to automatically work with new MacOS versions. I would never expect it to work when not specifically updated to the new MacOS version.

Meh, it's still leagues ahead of windows.

Hey it's not nice to pick on the retarded kid.
pajuch · 2022-10-26 10:53
Yeah exactly you can't rely on these things
shaqfooVA · 2022-10-26 12:28
Interesting. It's not even so much emacs as it is \`libgccjit\`. I'll try those tools, thanks!
shaqfooVA · 2022-10-26 12:30
I've been using this: [https://github.com/jimeh/build-emacs-for-macos](https://github.com/jimeh/build-emacs-for-macos) Since I've generally been unable to get \`emacs-plus\` to build with native comp
shaqfooVA · 2022-10-26 12:31
I found this thread, too, and tried it but was unable to get the \`libgccjit\` hello world to compile with this trick
shaqfooVA · 2022-10-26 12:31
Will try this. thanks!
amake · 2022-10-26 14:43
emacs-app-devel depends on libgcc which includes libgccjit, so I am saying that libgccjit also built successfully for me.
varsderk · 2022-10-26 18:26
That’s what I’ve been using as well. I did not know that there was a homebrew alternative. I might just keep compiling from source though :-)

Yabai (main/master) is already fixed on Ventura! Check the yabai repo and the issue concerning Ventura.

Amazing, I won't upgrade yet but really appreciate the maintainers
