How to make org mode not one giant block of text

Ok-Analysis-7820 · 2022-10-23 19:32
Hello all, I am currently using Org mode to try and write a JET SOP/ write fantasy books or whatever. However, When trying to navigate through the text instead of going through each line, it jumps through each paragraph in chunks. I know that this is due to "word wrap" and that technically it is all one giant line. But how does one change this behavior. I know a few days ago when I tested Visual Studio code I got the same issue. (ignore my bad writing, this is super duper early) TL:DR: how to change function of emacs to make it act more like a traditional word processor? https://preview.redd.it/iauh9i9pxlv91.png?width=1855&format=png&auto=webp&s=5dfac263ab85123ce114c092575693ef3b4289b7

thanks, that got me on the right path. As i found auto fill mode ( which may or may not be working. Though now I want to figure out why the words go to half the screen.

Maybe customize the fill column?

If the endgoal here is text navigation you might want to look into avy. Other than that the usual forward sentence, backward sentence etc. commands could also be useful.

Because your fill-column is probably just 80 chars or slightly below :). Set it some value you prefer,

Maybe M-x next-visual-line is what you're after. Try it out and, if it is, bind it accordingly

> TL:DR: how to change function of emacs to make it act more like a traditional word processor? The other suggestions will absolutely get you there. For batteries-included packages that give you dedicated prose-writing modes, see also [olivetti](https://github.com/rnkn/olivetti) and [writeroom-mode](https://github.com/joostkremers/writeroom-mode). Even if you don't use them directly they can be good inspiration for different ways to get there yourself. I personally have this config for occasional use: (use-package writeroom-mode :bind (("C-c w" . writeroom-mode)) :hook (writeroom-mode . visual-line-mode)) It's not on all the time because usually I'm in and out of files quickly and don't need it. But if I'm going to be writing in one org file for awhile, I hit the shortcut above to focus and treat emacs more like a word processor for the duration.
