I just reinstalled archlinux on to this device, so I had to reinstall emacs as well. When I got my config up and running, I made sure that emojify downloaded the emojis, but emacs still wont render them. I'll attach a photo of what it looks like, plus my emojify conf

Do you have a font installed for emoji's? If you install `noto-fonts-emoji` and restart emacs, does the problem persist?

this font problem is cursed to be posted on every linux, macos, vim, emacs forum ever created at least once a day.

Unfortunately it does persist

These are reserved for private use characters. Each font will draw differently. Are you sure that you have a font installed that can render them?

that's weird. emojis have official unicode code points, they're not implemented via private use. why would emacs packages implement them using private use areas?
qahvua · 2022-10-23 20:11
those aren't unicode emoji code points, those are private use code points. i guess maybe some emacs packages use private use areas for emoji? that would be weird.
try to copy-paste an actual (unicode) emoji into emacs and see what happens. like this one: 🙂
edit: yeah, i was able to copy-paste that emoji into emacs just fine, and i don't have emojify or any other emoji package that i know of. i *do* have a proper emoji font installed on my system but that's it, no extra setup in emacs.

The solution is to boot to the scratch buffer
keroeslux · 2022-10-23 22:22
I'm stupid, needed all-the-icons
funk443 · 2022-10-24 03:09
Did you do all-the-icons-install-fonts?
