Save mark ring

I would find it handy to persist the global mark ring between Emacs invocations. I am currently using desktop and history functionality. How can I persist the global mark ring between "sessions"?

Use `savehist.el`. Customize option `savehist-additional-variables` to save variable `mark-ring` or `global-mark-ring`.

Doesn't work for me. When I add global-mark-ring as `(savehist-additional-variables '(search-ring regexp-search-ring global-mark-ring))` into .emacs it is not saved in `emacs.d/history`. Note that `search-ring` and `regexp-search-ring` do get saved.
