Text shrinks when put between quotes?

R5: Learning my way through Emacs and Lisp as a total programming beginner. Using manuals included, no text issues on my desktop which is on Windows 10 atm. Using my laptop running Fedora 36 all fully updated and I notice what looks to be some kind of textual error? Any idea what this is and how to correct it so that all the text sizes are uniform?

That's fun. Put the cursor over the small text, and type `C-u C-x =` and Emacs should tell you which face(s) are involved, and you should be able to fix the face in question through the customize UI. (This might be something of a workaround for the underlying cause; but I don't know what that would be.)

Ta. It was "inheriting" some trait. Ticked that off and hit apply and it's all sorted. God knows what was up with that. Will crossreference with desktop later

Does this appear in all modes? The font size is controlled by the theme. Try another theme so see if there is a difference. Text between quotes is controlled by the `font-lock-string-face` variable. What does that say?

With the default theme, the face used for that text inherits from “fixed-pitch-serif” which sets the font to “Monospace Serif”. This defaults to an ugly (subjective) font on some Linux distros. To fix the issue for all faces which set the font to “Monospace Serif”, change the font associated with it by customizing “font-family-alist”. I’m not in front of a computer right now so some names may be incorrect.
