How do you manage keeping your tasks in emacs and your phone workflow

mrngilles · 2022-10-19 13:42
Hi r/emacs ! While I love org-mode, and would much rather use it than any other option, I still have a hard time because I manage a lot of my tasks through my phone. Same for content consumption, I do a lot on my phone thus cannot save anything easily in org. I've tried orgzly, but it does not really fit me. How do you manage all that ? Thanks !
Domva · 2022-10-19 13:49
I use orgzly and syncthing. I found that using other syncing options with orgzly introduced some conflict issues. Syncthing worked best. So, basically, if I find something interesting on the interweb on the phone and can't read it at the moment, I just send the tab to my computer (firefox browser). If I need to write something down, like a reminder or a note, for me orgzly works just fine. A single org file serves as an inbox with different TODO items and general notes. More specific things go to other org files where there's more structure.

Do you manage your calendar as well with it ? Your action items ?
radian_ · 2022-10-19 14:42
You could try Organice in your phones browser if you keep your org files in one of the services they connect to (dropbox, gitlab, webdav) https://organice.200ok.ch/ Or, if you keep one file in there to capture to, and refile later...
radian_ · 2022-10-19 14:43
If you've got really good eyesight, you could try emacs in Termux too.
mrngilles · 2022-10-19 14:57
Looks like an interesting solution, I'll try it out Thanks for the tip
mrngilles · 2022-10-19 14:58
I wanted to try that, but eyesight is not the only blocker to it...
Domva · 2022-10-19 15:05
Mostly - yes. Only if I need events that are shared with other people, I use google calendar. What do you mean by "action items"?
mrngilles · 2022-10-19 15:25
I meant TODOs and stuff, but you already answered to that :)
FluidDr1nker · 2022-10-19 15:59
If you are on an iphone: https://plainorg.com/
ExistingProgram3883 · 2022-10-19 17:29
Do you use Gitlab for syncing? How easy does pull/commit/push work from the phone?
digikar · 2022-10-19 17:56
Fdroid can help install orgro. It is only a reader, but perhaps that's the best we have so far. I'm relying on orgro + syncthing.
bespokey · 2022-10-19 18:29
I started with this setup but I didn't like Syncthing's public access and device ID broadcasts. Now I'm using rclone with a Google Drive app on my machines and Orgzly with DriveSync on Android.
radian_ · 2022-10-19 18:34
I've been using dropbox I'm afraid.

Isn't it possible to increase the font size if that is a problem? It works for me. I used emacs on my phone for 10 years or so now. First on a Nokia N9, then on a Jolla Phone (both support running emacs natively and had better terminal emulators than anything I have seen on Android) and then in Termux since I returned to Android a few years ago. I think it works great. I have sshd running as well to make it easy to connect to the same emacs sesson and edit the same files from a desktop/laptop computer when one is nearby, and I sync documents with git, so not all editing has to happen on the phone itself. But I think making edits on the phone works pretty well when I need to.

[beorg](https://beorg.app/) is hands-down the best iOS app for agenda views. I keep my org agenda files in Dropbox to sync. Plain Org is also really nice on iOS for general org-mode stuff.
Cletip · 2022-10-19 20:15
I used orgzly with syncthing. Now I use termux + syncthing, and I don't regret it at all. Sure, the view is not very easy, but termux allows me to have a real org mode, and not a clone (I was stuck with some things because orgzly doesn't have all the features of org mode). The view is certainly not practical, but you can see when you are using termux by introducing a variable, which triggers for example an increase in font size. I don't regret this choice at all. Finally, you can also use both: orgzly and termux. You just have to put syncthing on your phone and on termux, and everything is fine

I really don't. No solution is as reliable and robust as I wish. Org shines on the desktop. Otherwise, not so much. Not saying it's not possible, but rather that it is not to my liking.
Thaodan · 2022-10-19 22:19
For me I use org-caldav with todo-support and SailfishOS Tasks. I also share them the same way with my girl friend.

Here is a blog post I read years ago that changed my perspective on trying to wrestle with Org Mode (and technology in general): [org-mode In Your Pocket Is a GNU-Shaped Devil](https://mike.puddingtime.org/vintage/2010/02/03/orgmode-in-your). Rather than try to shoehorn Org into your phone you will probably be much happier using the standards that were designed for sync, e.g. CalDAV, then putting whatever effort you have left into syncing *that* with Org on your desktop. That said, I do like the looks of Plainorg.

Beorg + working copy app on iOS. It requires some additional and disciplined steps of using git on all your devices. All mobile capture is kept in a separate [mobile.org](https://mobile.org) file, from which I refile into other files, though this refiling is done mostly on my desktop, mainly because there are times I forget to commit and push and so to minimise dealing with merge conflicts. Beorg also syncs tasks with my calendar, which is an option in the app. I like deciding before hand that I will handle some task management in my mobile device, and at that time will make sure to commit and push, and so have the latest version on my mobile devices. i also use [pinboard.in](https://pinboard.in) for easy link capture across any device or OS, which I can access in Emacs with a package. I suppose one could use Dropbox or some other sync, but I generally prefer the reliability and simplicity of plain git despite the annoyance of remembering to commit, push and pull.

I've recently set up my todo lists so that they're in org files that sync to Trello using org-trello. Seems to be working ok so far.
Michal_Atlas · 2022-10-20 10:09
Syncthing is life, syncthing is love. That's the first step, but now how to read them? I used to just use orgro which is awesome but doesn't support editing. So I ended up with Logseq, which ended up using Org-mode as the format they save out as. So I use that on my phone, and it adds the benefit that there's some extra features like annotating PDFs that works nicely and integrates with my notes, Emacs can't read that specific thing but otherwise I just use Emacs to edit the org files on pc.

Another org-mode/ orgzly / syncthing user here. Find myself in ediff every month or so dealing with conflicts, but that's ok. Have tried DooM emacs in termux (and on Samsung DeX - which is buggy as hell) but the usability is not there. (1) If I'm carrying a portable keyboard I can carry a lightweight tablet (2) Also *ducks for cover* emacs is a GUI application. Currently looking at logseq as a phone interface for org-roam. Haven't scrathed the surface I also have a few "phone" workarounds for things like checklists and location based reminders using Tasker. both (a) acting directly on my org files (sed / awk / grep shell commands); and (2) using orgzly intents Really need to do more with tasker. Dynamic (weather dependent) packing lists etc are all possible. As are things like interactive cooking (recipies) from org-files.
cidra_ · 2022-10-20 12:26
None. I switched to CalDAV for tasks

Syncthing can easily be set up to run on private discovery server for your own devices (I host one on a Pi along with backups etc). Syncthing can very easily be self-hosted, and is a much more privacy conscious option than putting your files on Google Drive, if that is your concern.
KleenexQ · 2022-10-20 13:20
Or run termux-setup-storage to give Termux access to your phone files, then you only need syncthing on your phone, and will only have 1 copy of each file on your device
bespokey · 2022-10-20 13:27
When using Syncthing with a mobile device part of the communication is aided by their servers. The default options even have the LAN broadcast which requires careful setup to avoid this information published on non-private WiFi networks. Since I'm already using Google's services it doesn't add any of these concerns. If I were to avoid Google's services then I would search for a self-hosted solution that doesn't coordinate centrally.
KleenexQ · 2022-10-20 13:40
Well if you run your own discovery server, and setup your devices accordingly, nothing will ever go to the public syncthing servers. The discovery broadcast messages are more of an issue, but syncthing has the option to only run on trusted WiFi networks, which is a few taps away. It is entirely possible to run syncthing on a mobile device without anything going to servers outside of your control. But use whatever works for you! I just want anyone reading this thread to know syncthing can be entirely private.
odeuteronomy · 2022-10-20 13:48
Same here.
bespokey · 2022-10-20 13:51
Yes, Syncthing can be run entirely private and self-hosted.
owmagow · 2022-10-20 14:18
Lots of great comments here. Just to add an option: I no longer use my reminders app. 1. I view my org files through Plain Org, synced with dropbox. The TODO tasks translate into buttons … pretty sweet. 2. I wrote an emacs script that emails me my to do list every morning and i quickly browse it as i am drinking coffee in the morning.
vifon · 2022-10-20 16:59
My rule of thumb is to only do serious task management at my PC. If I need to do it on the go, I only scribble a quick note using whatever I have at hand and then rewrite it at home when at my PC. This way I can make a note on the go, but it also doesn't stay half-assed as it would otherwise be. I also don't feel the pressure to make it properly using sub-optimal tools, since I'm going to rewrite it anyway. I know this is probably not the solution you're looking for, but this is a practice that works for me. Reading the notes on the go is far easier, so you can probably figure out a comfortable solution. Orgzly would probably work, though personally I prefer a plain SSH.
Top-Egg-16 · 2022-10-20 20:07
Orgzly is fine, I recommend you give it another chance to see if it sticks. For my it took 3 rounds, but got used to it and now I'm not looking back. Using syncthing also.
wuqui · 2022-10-20 20:58
I use logseq. Works with the sync options described by other people above. They are going to roll out their own sync very soon, and I'm very eagerly waiting for that because all other options haven't really convinced me.
wuqui · 2022-11-04 13:48
They have rolled out their sync service now and it looks really promising. I'm even using it in combination with orgzly for capturing things from my Android phone.
deepaknegilachu · 2022-12-31 10:40
I tried orgly , orgro and metanote(play store). Metanote is my favourite.
