Encrypting org files with age

ratsclub · 2022-10-07 14:52
[Age](https://github.com/FiloSottile/age) is a quite new specification about encrypting files and I wanted to use it to encrypt my org files instead of using pgp, as age can leverage the use of ssh keys that I already have and use. The reason is that I don't have pgp keys and don't want to bring the maintenance of it just to encrypt the org files. I couldn't find any existing module and if it does not exist, how would I start to implement such feature?

A couple of weeks back, someone had a similar tool from Mozilla working in a similar way and I recommended having a look at [ansible-vault-mode](https://github.com/zellio/ansible-vault-mode), because ansible vaults work very much the same way.. You have a file, a key and a command that can encrypt the file with the key or decrypt it.. It's not too complicated and might be worth looking at, because so far, I haven't found a package for using age encrypted files and I don't really use them THAT often anymore since I moved the data into my password manager :)

Look at epa-hook.el and the definition of `auto-encryption-mode`.
