> I was having a conversation one day and I couldn’t recall the name of a term, something I learned from a YouTube video. That bothered me. After the chat I went back to YouTube, found the video, and started searching through it. I increased the playback speed and went back and forth but still couldn’t find it. After a few minutes of that struggle, I thought: “what the heck am I doing?”. Then I wrote a tiny elisp function to extract subtitles. While reading through the subs I realized how much good stuff went past my ears (while watching the video).
It's tiny and very simple, but I think can be used already.

Using youtube-dl is a very cool idea: I totally missed that was possible thanks!
(Some time ago I ended up extracting the transcript with a Python package, as I explained here: https://ag91.github.io/blog/2022/03/27/an-elisp-snippet-to-dowload-youtube-videos-transcripts/)

To be honest, I just needed to solve a momentary, personal headache, and I did what looked like the most straightforward solution. I didn't even plan to share it since it's so small and doesn't do much. But after using it with a few videos, taking notes, and learning much more than before, I felt stupid not making something like this sooner.
I'm hoping to get rid of youtube-dl at some point and figure out the way to extract subs without it. My main issue is that youtube-dl can't extract autogenerated subs anymore, which makes the package useless for the majority of vids on YouTube.

I use that add-on in order to quickly search through YouTube videos. Maybe someone else will find it useful.

yeah same here: I saw there is a way to extract the transcript (all subtitles as a text file) via JavaScript but ended up relying on a python package hoping the author has the patience to keep up to date with the API changes of youtube XD
