What distro has Emacs 28 with native compilation in its default package repo?

podtatranec · 2022-09-30 08:21
At least gentoo does (jit use flag)
anaumann · 2022-09-30 08:25
Unpopular opinion: snap is pretty much equal to apt in Ubuntu nowadays and has 28.2 with native compilation :)
MarcellM888 · 2022-09-30 09:20
Does anybody know if Arch has it?
BillDStrong · 2022-09-30 09:31
It is available in extras, so yes it does.
BillDStrong · 2022-09-30 09:32
NixOS has it in its latest stable channel.
singularineet · 2022-09-30 09:34
It's in Debian unstable, and seems to work fine on my Debian testing systems.
AsterOps · 2022-09-30 10:42
openSUSE Tumbleweed
Distinct_Win5107 · 2022-09-30 11:40
Fedora 36 does

Guix System: https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/tree/gnu/packages/emacs.scm#n93
randdis · 2022-09-30 12:29
you might tell the truth, but none what to hear it.
I hope snap disappears in the black commercial holes it came from, like unity did.
anaumann · 2022-09-30 12:40
I didn't say I was a fan of it, because I hate having to use twenty different package managers to install things to a single laptop, but a simple "snap install emacs" provided me with a recent, native-comp enabled emacs and that's a big plus in my book :)
Compared to all the other hoops I'd have to jump through, from looking up and adding a custom ppa to compiling emacs myself, snap is the lesser evil.

It is also easy to install the Nix package manager on any other distro and install up-to-date Emacs through Nix that way.
TelcDunedain · 2022-09-30 13:28
apt install guix on debian or ubuntu
Then use guix to install emacs-next-pgtk and some select emacs packages into your local user.
GanakaMoggallana · 2022-09-30 13:48
`sudo pacman -Syu emacs-nativecomp`
Enjoy :)
MarcellM888 · 2022-09-30 13:49
Yes, I found it on the arch-wiki. I think I’m blind, because I searched there before…
zoliky · 2022-09-30 13:59
Fedora
yep808 · 2022-09-30 15:24
As you guessed, Arch.
AngryFilament · 2022-09-30 16:33
if I know the package name, I usually have an easier time straight up searching for it in the package search bar
SlowValue · 2022-09-30 18:51
[Debian sid](https://packages.debian.org/sid/emacs) has it.
agumonkey · 2022-09-30 19:22
oh wow, not just aur .. thanks archers
Schievel1 · 2022-09-30 19:33
Gentoo
tomekowal · 2022-09-30 20:04
I am not familiar with Nix package manager and I am not sure how to do it. I’ve found something about overlays and there was GH repo with “community” overlay. But I still didn’t figure out where to put what :p
pwnedary · 2022-09-30 20:17
With Nix installed it should be enough to run `nix-env -iA nixpkgs.emacs28NativeComp` and adjust `PATH` accordingly, (provided you have a channel called `nixpkgs` that points to Nixpkgs 22.05, which the installer sets up for you). No need for overlays since it is all there in Nixpkgs already.
invsblduck · 2022-10-01 03:52
`emacs-nativecomp`
BillDStrong · 2022-10-01 06:51
Aur for popular packages, and packages used by the devs, tend to have the stable version in Arch, and Aur has dev versions, such as the emacs 29 git builds.
Pay08 · 2022-10-01 07:43
If you're running Gentoo (or anything with Portage), don't use Nix. Apparently it'll break the whole system.
tomekowal · 2022-10-02 07:53
That didn't work.
❯ nix-env -iA nixpkgs.emacs28NativeComp
error: attribute 'emacs28NativeComp' in selection path 'nixpkgs.emacs28NativeComp' not found
I've also tried to check if I have version 22.05, and it looks like I do.
❯ nix-instantiate --eval -E '(import <nixpkgs> {}).lib.nixpkgsVersion' trace: `lib.nixpkgsVersion` is deprecated, use `lib.version` instead!
"22.05pre350399.a529f0c125a"
tomekowal · 2022-10-02 07:55
Thanks for the heads up. I am using ElementaryOS based on Ubuntu, so I should be fine :)
pwnedary · 2022-10-02 08:20
That commit hash in the version seems old. Try updating your channels first, with `nix-channel --update` (corresponds to `apt update`).
(Maybe run `nix-channel --list` and check that `nixpkgs https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-22.05` appears, otherwise it is easy to readd. I had a small hiccup once where only root had channels and not my user, and so me running `nix-channel --update` without `sudo` did nothing.)
tomekowal · 2022-10-02 08:38
Indeed, `nix-channel --list` returns nothing.
I've tried: `nix-channel --add https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-22.05`
but then `nix-channel --update` returns `error: unable to download 'https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-22.05': HTTP error 404 ('')`
How do I correctly add the channel?
[EDIT] Found it: `nix-channel --add https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable`
Thanks for your help!
pwnedary · 2022-10-02 08:56
To add: `nixpkgs-unstable` is recommended for using Nix as package manager, so you're good, but there was a typo in my answer, should have been `nixos-22.05`, so something like
nix-channel --add https://nixos.org/channels/nixos-22.05 nixpkgs
for stable channel (half year relase cycle) instead of rolling release. (There is no separate `nixpkgs-22.05` channel, but if there were the only small difference would be that it could be advanced before NixOS tests necessarily succeed.)
randdis · 2022-10-03 12:24
Yeah, I can imagine that. On manjaro it's in the main repro so it is a no brainer. Not sure I would have it installed otherwise.
