lsp for python using tamp?

BaldSuperHare · 2022-09-28 14:47
I need to work in this setup : emacs installed on desktop (either linux or windows) connecting to RPI with debian. How can I get the LSP mode to work over tramp? LSP mode returns that it could work with pyright remote, but on which machine I shall install it? I've tried pyls (installed on remote machine) but it crash every time I try to enable `lsp-mode`.

lsp-mode doesn't work over TRAMP yet. There are a lot of issues about it in their repo https://github.com/emacs-lsp/lsp-mode/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+TRAMP

TL;DR: nothing works reliably on TRAMP. I have tried all possible tricks and hacks to make lsp (python pyright or pyls) work with lsp-mode and eglot. lsp-mode fails with starting the server on remote, while eglot blocks the UI for ages, starts the server and then crashes/freezes emacs.

You’re better off learning tmux IMO. Tramp rarely works well for anything heavy.

That is nonsense I use it all the time and works great

You should replace nothing with "when using pyright or pyls nothing" because with haskell-language-server eglot and tramp work flawlessly connecting to a docker container.

You are comparing apples to oranges. docker container is residing in your machine, so zero latency issue, hence tramp should work flawlessly. However that is not the usual case where you need to connect with a remote machine having non-zero latency, where nothing works.

SpunkyDred is a terrible bot instigating arguments all over Reddit whenever someone uses the phrase apples-to-oranges. I'm letting you know so that you can feel free to ignore the quip rather than feel provoked by a bot that isn't smart enough to argue back. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette.
