Ctrl-n/p in evil-mode? Bad idea? Good idea? If good, how do?

The in-built `viper-mode` does what you want.

Use Evil-define-key. You should always check for evil’s documentation. At least for configuration level, it is thorough The default vim behavior of C-n and C-p in insert state is manually triggering completion pop up menu. No one really uses it I believe, most people I know using either vim or evil as their primary editor, bind them to the next line/previous line. I don’t recommend using viper, viper emulates vi, not vim. You can’t bear a vi emulation layer without visual state and text objects stuffs.

I don’t remember the setting off the top of my head, but I use what is effectively a hybrid. My insert mode just had regular emacs bindings and I switch between both depending on what I’m doing. I learned vim first though and then layered in readline/emacs bindings
