I do not like to set `internal-border-with` to anything other than 0, because I don't want the mode-line to not extend across the entire frame. So I've been looking for ways of adding a bit of 'padding' to my frame.
Left and right it's straightforward: simple set the fringe to some suitable width. Top padding is less so.
I figured I could make use of the `header-line` for that, and this seemed like a good start:
(setq header-line-format " ")
Now, I found having a whole blank line of padding a bit much (I know...), so I tried specifying the height property in the value of `header-line-format` directly:
(setq header-line-format (propertize " " 'face '(:height 80)))
But that doesn't make a difference unless the height property is greater than that of `header-line`.
The only way I've found to make the header-line take up less than the default line height is by messing with the height of `header-line`. Unfortunately, some modes make use of the header-line for displaying stuff, so I find myself having to add hooks to every mode I encounter that does make use of the header-line, e.g.
(defun my/reset-header-line-face ()
(face-remap-add-relative 'header-line '(:height 180)))
(add-hook 'use-package-statistics-mode-hook 'my/reset-header-line-face)
Does anyone know or can think of a less ad-hoc solution?
