Org mode To Do list on mobile

Dr_Physics_ · 2022-09-24 22:06
Hey everyone, I’ve recently got a todo list setup on emacs. I really enjoy using it, however, I’m not always at my computer and I still would like to be able to access my todo list and potentially add items to it as well. Is there any way I can interface org mode with my mobile device. I currently have an iPhone, but I’m hoping to switch to android soon so any advice would be great. Thanks!

I use Beorg

Beorg is fantastic on iphone, and I was using that while on there. When I switched to Android like you are planning to I went with Orgzly. It's great

I’m using Beorg on iPhone and it’s a fantastic app to work with org-files. Sync with Nextcloud works perfect (no issues for the past two years), but you can also use iCloud or Dropbox. https://beorgapp.com

I just got that setup! So hopefully it works nicely

I was a little worried looking at the payment options in beorg. I will definitely check this out too if I have the time. Nice to know there’s a FOSS option!

termux and rsync

Same here and actually I've first started using Orgzly - then emacs =) I believe it's the most convenient existing option for to-do items. It has widgets, it's own (unfortunately - couldn't find an emacs analogue) query language for customisable search views. However it does not support org-roam (e.g. it expect flat structure of your org files) or any kind of attachments.

I just use `(org-batch-store-agenda-views)` and sync the resulting html/pdf files anywhere. https://orgmode.org/manual/Exporting-Agenda-Views.html I do not like editing orgfiles outside of emacs as that would use skip any hooks there.

Me too but without a keyboard, it's not the most user-friendly setup to use.

Have you seen https://github.com/alphapapa/org-ql ?

I can wholeheartedly recommend beorg. It has a very nice, clean look but is also super flexible.

use termux

If you decide to stay on iPhone, I recommend Plainorg - which I find fantastically good: https://plainorg.com/

Orgzly on Android, emacs on termux and on all computers, syncthing everywhere. Mind like water, at last.
KleenexQ · 2022-09-25 16:16
Orgzly is great - especially notifications based on your to-dos I use this, with syncthing handling the document syncing. Unbeatable IMO

I use Beorg or sometimes just use iA Writer

I am also on iphone. I tried beorg. It is a good app in the sense that it can read and export org file. But afterall it is just a todo app, it is not org-mode. My eventually solution is to run emacs in a vps, and use a ssh client to connect to the vps and run in terminal mode. I recommend terminus as the ssh client for ios, this is a great app, and scrolling the screen is close to as natural as scroll in native mobile app. You can also emulate the arrow keys by swiping the screen. Terminus also provides you some frequently used shortcut: e.g C-c C-g C-a, so you can type them easily in mobile device's virtual keyboard. But I assume you have to familiar with evil/meow, i.e modal editing to use emacs on mobile device. Emulating chord in mobile device is just a disaster.

I didn’t even know that was possible from an iPhone so thanks! I’m gonna use beorg in the meantime, but if I ever have a free weekend to set this all up I definitely will.
FreeAd7233 · 2022-09-25 20:13
If you are familiar with using modal editing, set up won't cost much than 2 hours hahaha. Just: 1. Just find a vps provider (or if you have a public IP, you can just use your home pc) 2. Install emacs on the vps, and migrate your config to it (you don't need other fancy stuffs, just org related stuff) 3. Download termius on the ios, and set up the connection. And that's it!

Have seen, haven't tried, first item on my org-mode "study list".
