Emacs-nox Arch linux does not render all-the-icons
MarcellM888 · 2022-09-23 21:06
Hello, when I'm using the GUI emacs, the icons getting displayed as expected, but with Emacs-nox package from arch, the icons does not render at all. The terminal I'm using is Kitty with powerlevel10k, the icons there renders as expected too.
Does anybody met this issue?

Perhaps rendering images, including icons, requires support for X. The nox, in emacs-nox stands for 'No X Window' support.

Yeah Emacs-nox is terminal only, I use it on my server and headless Raspberrypis.

not to be judgemental but why not use TRAMP from an Emacs running on your machine?
mok000 · 2022-09-24 00:42
Because I prefer to have a shell and in a separate window in my terminal emulator :) Anyway, this discussion is not about my workflow, I only mentioned it to illustrate to OP what the `emacs-nox` package is for.

There are more than less people argue that tramp mode is laggy than ssh so they just prefer to using the emacs-nox I believe.

Emacs can only draw images when running one of its guis. There has been talk about extending the terminal ui to support images for those times when it is running in a terminal that has some way of displaying them. You can read about it on the emacs-devel mailing list.

Can you please post screenshots of what you mean? What icons are not getting displayed? If in a terminal, isn't that your font?
MarcellM888 · 2022-09-24 07:31
No, I checked, the font does contain the nerd fonts, all-the-icons fonts are installed, powerlevel10k icons shows up as expected, the link to the emacs GUI version which has the working icons: https://imgur.com/a/6DaPJkh

Ahh, understood. Though it's a little bit sad, because in the nox version the ligatures work like a charm because of the terminal, with the gui version of the icons works but the ligatures not.. Sad. Thanks for the help!

I used it, because I was coming from vim and like the terminal, the easy way to use ligatures, sadly in the GUI it's not working to me.

Understood, thanks for the help!

You’re welcome.

If the icons are utf-8 symbols it shouldn't be an issue.

My understanding is that nox in the terminal uses fonts chosen by your terminal app. The Gui version is likely using different fonts which may support different sets of characters. I'd suggest trying to switch font for the gui to something like google noto mono and see what happens. Fonts are a bit of a dark art with emacs depending on the OS you are using. Sometimes it's easy, other times it's like pulling out a tooth. I use a combination of khmer, japanese and chinese text in many documents and getting them to all play nicely has sometimes been a challenge -- especially with monospace fonts. A bit of googling will turn up a number of different ways of doing things.
