Emacs sync to Google drive

manho1e · 2022-09-23 08:24
I have been using Google drive to share documents with my family and across different devices. Booting up xserver and going to browser to upload the file I need has always been the solution. But lately I find this solution to be pretty stupid. Are there a better way to do it? Looking for: a simple, cli/tui solution to sync Emacs file to Google drive. What I have found: Grive (seems like it stopped working?) iCloud, Dropbox, syncthing (require xserver(?) Thanks you in advance!!

Go syncthing way

Try rclone it has a pretty good documentation how to get going. But it does require manual push/pull scripts. No autosync between local and remote.

Tramp+rclone is your friend

Syncthing is decentralized. If you have a nas host it and sync between all your devices

GVFS is another possibility. TRAMP also has support for gvfs, check the info manual.

How would this help with syncing?

I've done this in the past and works surprisingly well. Now, I'm using GNOME which makes adding Google online services a bit easier. So your mileage may vary.

Hooks/advices + rclone seems like the path of less resistance

That's what I went with. I insync/sync with google drive which then syncs with my phone. From there, I use orgzly on my phone that sends notifications based on dates and deadlines in my agenda. Obviously Insync costs a bit, but it's easy.

This is the same setup I eventually went to. Insync was pricey but smooth sailing now. Also using Orgzly!
