missing calc-loaddefs.el
hajovonta · 2022-09-16 12:13
Hi all,
recently I noticed I can't use calc.
To M-x calc Emacs is complaining with:
`apply: Cannot open load file: No such file or directory, calc-loaddefs.el`
on (setq debug-on-error t) I get this:
>Debugger entered--Lisp error: (file-missing "Cannot open load file" "No such file or directory" "calc-loaddefs.el")
#<subr load>("calc-loaddefs.el" nil t nil nil)
apply(#<subr load> ("calc-loaddefs.el" nil t))
load("calc-loaddefs.el" nil t)
#<subr autoload-do-load>((autoload "calc" ("loaddefs.elc" . 123436) t nil) calc nil)
apply(#<subr autoload-do-load> ((autoload "calc" ("loaddefs.elc" . 123436) t nil) calc))
autoload-do-load((autoload "calc" ("loaddefs.elc" . 123436) t nil) calc)
command-execute(calc record)
execute-extended-command(nil "calc")
I'm now out of ideas, this file "loaddefs.elc" is really not present on my system.
What should I do?

You didn't indicate what version you're running, so it's hard to help you. It seems like there might be something wrong with your installation of Emacs.
(If you're running the `master` branch, I suggest `make bootstrap`.)

it's snapshot 29.0.50. Should I reinstall Emacs?
Stefan-Kangas · 2022-09-16 20:22
I'd try that, yes. If you can't get it working, include the details from `M-x report-emacs-bug` and send an email to [bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org](mailto:bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org).

This is also happening on Ubuntu 22.04 using the PPA [http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ppa/ubuntu](http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ppa/ubuntu)
Which is:
GNU Emacs 29.0.50 (build 1, x86\_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.33, cairo version 1.16.0) of 2022-09-15
And it's been this way for a couple of months I'd say - I reverted to the stock version that comes with Ubuntu (emacs 27).
I've raised a bug on it.
hajovonta · 2022-09-19 11:42
thanks, that's my version. Yes, a couple of months ago, I'm not sure exactly.
Thanks for raising a bug. Can you please share the link?
hajovonta · 2022-09-19 11:43
I've reinstalled emacs, but unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem. As richardxday confirmed, the problem is not on my side.
richardxday · 2022-09-19 12:25
I reported it but it looks like it's an issue with the PPA ([http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ppa/ubuntu](http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ppa/ubuntu)) I use and not with emacs itself. The bug got rejected by the emacs team.
calc-loaddefs.el does exist in the emacs code repository so it is likely a build problem with your system.

I couldn't locate this file. Can we place it in the load path somewhere?
Stefan-Kangas · 2022-09-19 13:23
Where did you install it from? I'd report it to whoever created that package.
hajovonta · 2022-09-19 14:19
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-elisp/ppa/ubuntu focal main
Stefan-Kangas · 2022-09-19 14:37
So you should report it to whoever operates that PPA, because something there doesn't seem right.
