Emacs version use poll results - (cut short because ZohoSurvey is not a good option!) - Twitter poll link in the comments.

https://twitter.com/emacs_gifs/status/1569283437160443906?s=20&t=hg5p4H7sBnhqVcQTFdQgGA - live poll is running for the next week on Twitter.
anaumann · 2022-09-12 11:20
You could have used a normal poll post here on reddit :D
cazzipropri · 2022-09-12 13:15
3D doughnut chart
arthurno1 · 2022-09-12 13:33
How many did answered?
IceOleg · 2022-09-12 13:36
Can we also find out if anyone other than myself is using Emacs as a Flatpak?
IterativeSieve · 2022-09-12 13:44
I tried it on a Silverblue install but found it caused too much friction. I never really did get LSP working over tramp for toolbx containers.
ocodo · 2022-09-12 13:54
Zoho cut it off at 100 ... Beyond that no data and no count.
ocodo · 2022-09-12 13:55
You could
nisteeni · 2022-09-12 13:58
Easier for percentage calculations that way :D
ocodo · 2022-09-12 13:58
I'm on a diet
ocodo · 2022-09-12 14:02
It's almost like no calculations were necessary.
I'd be really interested to know if the sample is representative of the whole Emacs userbase.
Tbh I'd be shocked if it isn't
arthurno1 · 2022-09-12 14:09
Ok. Thanks
ossadeimorti · 2022-09-12 14:12
I managed to compile emacs 29 once and it never worked anymore afterwards, so now I'm stuck on v28 lol
super-linux-nerd · 2022-09-12 14:14

I'd bet a Ctrl key, version 28 is prevalent because of doom emacs. Didn't support 29 last time I read, few weeks ago.
Ghosty141 · 2022-09-12 14:19
Way more people on older versions I guess. This sub is quite modern
Ghosty141 · 2022-09-12 14:20
29 is still very buggy. Especially with WSL
IceOleg · 2022-09-12 14:28
>LSP
Yeah that is definitely not easy. It has to do with tuning the `FLATPAK_ENABLE_SDK_EXT` envionment variable to make the wrapper script add `npm` and its buddies to `$PATH` inside the sandbox, but add tramp and toolbx....
I haven't tried in Emacs yet, but I do have LSPs working with Neovim in a Flatpak pretty reliably so it is possible (but again, no tramp kinda stuff).
I think the most reasonable way to make this work would be to add the LSPs into the sandbox as flatpak extensions.
grimscythe_ · 2022-09-12 14:29
If only one hundred answered (got counted) how come that we have percentages with decimals?
slk_g500 · 2022-09-12 15:54
I'm on 29 for past few weeks. Really no problems at all.
moonfogprophet · 2022-09-12 16:16
Isn't 28 the current "stable" version anyways? Even Arch Linux (that's supposed to be bleeding edge but stable) packages 28 instead of 29 as the default
LeonardMH · 2022-09-12 16:45
Yes, 28.1 is the current stable version. v29 isn’t even listed on the [GNU Emacs releases page](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/history.html).
ExploringDuality · 2022-09-12 16:47
Oops. An overconfident newbie I am :) Forgot about stable vs current. Thanks!
Agling · 2022-09-12 18:28
Twitter is an even worse place for a poll. Only people with twitter accounts can take it. If you wanted to know the distribution of usage among twitter users, don't post the question on reddit.
ilemming · 2022-09-12 19:45
Not true. I've been using 29 for months. Only twice I had to deal with some serious native-comp stuff. Otherwise it's quite stable.
ilemming · 2022-09-12 19:49
Whoa the distribution looks better than Android OS versions.
baaa-sh · 2022-09-12 20:50
what percentage of emacs users answer polls I wonder?
Thaodan · 2022-09-12 21:42
29.x is unreleased.
arthurno1 · 2022-09-13 00:38
I compile 29 like every couple or weeks or so. Can be more often if I'm experimenting or so. Just delete your source, download new one and compile, what is the problem?
ocodo · 2022-09-13 00:48
The ones on the new versions.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 00:51
That was a great suggestion. Now make it constructive by suggesting an alternative.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 00:52
Google sheets level of accuracy ... is not something you want to trust your finances to.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 00:53
Different class of end-user.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 00:56
That missing comma has me thinking there's a Ctrl key version 28.

Someone already suggested using reddit's poll feature. I was not able to infer from your response whether you just don't care that reddit already has that feature, or if there is some problem with it.
If reddit doesn't do what you want, something like a google form or survey monkey would be the next natural choice.
I feel like you chose the literal two worst places to host a poll, and it makes me wonder why. If your next choice is facebook or TikTok, I will have my answer.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 01:03
> I will have my answer.
So people needing a Reddit or Google account to participate is _better_?
Agling · 2022-09-13 01:12
I would not assume a random person has a reddit account, but if I am posting in the emacs reddit sub, I think it's entirely appropriate. Only redditors are going to read and respond to your post and poll. As for google, one doesn't need a google account to respond to a google form.
Although, even if it wasn't so, assuming people have a google account is pretty benign. Pretty much everyone who has a reddit account has a google account, and google is not a controversial social media platform. On the other hand, only a certain type of person has a twitter account, and I, for one, would be offended if someone assumed I was one of those.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 01:23
> On the other hand, only a certain type of person has a twitter account, and I, for one, would be offended if someone assumed I was one of those.
I wonder what it's like walking around with all these biases swimming around in your head. The sense of superiority must be nice though.
Agling · 2022-09-13 01:35
Meh. It's not particularly a big leap to make assumptions about twitter users. They aren't all the same, of course. But the inherent limitations and goals of the platform mean that nothing real intelligent goes on there, and its users are folks who are fine with that--that is what they have in common.
I know and like many twitter users, but among people I respect, none of them spend time on twitter, nor do I. There are plenty of platforms that are that way (I mention TikTok and Facebook as prominent examples, though not quite as extreme). Nothing wrong with people using those platforms for their intended purposes, but one shouldn't assume everyone is on that level.
ocodo · 2022-09-13 02:06
Catch 22, no way to effectively reach 100% of the Emacs using population.
~~I think considering all major *nix distros package 28.1 as stable we're unlikely to see any significant number (>10%) of people on older versions.~~ - Wrong.
ExploringDuality · 2022-09-13 05:26
:D
ossadeimorti · 2022-09-13 10:06
I get some weird error for which I couldn't find anything online. Spent too much time on it already and I decided to just go back to v28 for now.
podtatranec · 2022-09-13 20:39
Doom runs on 29 just fine though there was a bug for a few weeks that made things broken. It's been fixed though.
But yes officially only released versions are supported (whatever that means in a non commercial setting)
PetrzalkaRulez · 2022-09-14 04:39
Define major \*nix distros: Debian stable (and even testing for that matter) is on 27.1, same for all current Ubuntu versions.
ocodo · 2022-09-14 08:05
Hey, I'm probably wrong then.
ocodo · 2022-09-17 04:42
https://emacssurvey.org/2020/ - so it turns out there's an ongoing project to poll Emacs users, with 7k+ responses in 2020.
2022 poll is in the works, I'm helping with that effort.
ocodo · 2022-09-17 04:43
https://emacssurvey.org/2020/ - the 2022 one is coming.
