I had set rmail to work and it was working very well and then suddenly:
`Getting mail from the remote server...`
`movemail: cannot append message 1: Requested item not found`
If anyone has experience with this error, please let me know.
I am running Fedora

This is not a problem with Rmail, this is a problem with fetching email via `movemail`.
Did something change on your system, like a new version of `movemail` or a different setup for fetching email from the server?

Not that I am aware of. I checked the path and now get this error:
`Getting mail from the remote server...`
`movemail: /usr/libexec/emacs/28.1/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/movemail: invalid option -- '-'`
This is my basic configuration, with personal details ommitted:
`(use-package rmail`
`:config`
`(setq mail-source-movemail-program "/usr/libexec/emacs/28.1/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/movemail")`
`(setq rmail-movemail-program "/usr/libexec/emacs/28.1/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/movemail")`
`(setq rmail-movemail-variant-in-use 'mailutils)`
`(setq user-full-name "My name"`
`user-mail-address "user-email@com")`
`(setq rmail-primary-inbox-list (list "imaps://1234567%40place.com@imap.server.com"))`
`(setq rmail-remote-password-required t)`
`(setq rmail-remote-password "password")`
`(setq rmail-confirm-expunge nil)`
`(setq send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it)`
`(setq smtpmail-smtp-server "smtp.server.com")`
`(setq smtpmail-smtp-service 587)`
`(setq rmail-default-file "~/.emacs.d/rmail/RMAIL")`
`(setq rmail-file-name "~/.emacs.d/rmail/RMAIL")`
`(setq mail-default-headers "FCC: ~/.emacs.d/rmail/sent")`
`(setq rmail-default-file "~/.emacs.d/rmail/sent")`
`(setq rmail-mime-prefer-html t)`
`(setq message-signature "")`
`(setq message-auto-save-directory "~/.emacs.d/rmail/messages/")`
`(setq rmail-displayed-headers "^From:\\|^Subject:\\|^Date:\\|^Cc:")`

Seems like you intend to use `movemail` from GNU Mailutils, but the version actually invoked is the rather limited one that comes with Emacs. So some system configuration tinkering is required...

Thank you very much. I will tinker and revert.

Okay I installed GNU Mailutils from source as Fedora does not have a package for this program. Unfortunately, I still get this message:
`movemail: cannot append message 1: Requested item not found`
eli-zaretskii · 2022-09-06 19:00
Are you sure the `movemail` that is being run is the one from Mailutils? How did you make that sure?
pudentia · 2022-09-06 19:22
I am not sure! I changed the path to /usr/local/bin/movemail

As a makeshift solution I have installed wanderlust but my program of choice would still be rmail because I have used it for years and love its simplicity and speed.
