Want to switch from Neovim to Emacs
msbic · 2022-09-03 16:01
System crafters YouTube channel
anaumann · 2022-09-03 16:06
Why DO you want to switch from neovim? Find a good reason and start from there... And of course, system crafters..
telenieko · 2022-09-03 17:05
The emacs manual itself is quite good
electricRGB · 2022-09-03 17:27
I'd recommend going with Spacemacs. It's VERY Vim influenced and a great way to start by dipping your toes in, rather than starting from scratch. Source: experience.

System Crafters Emacs from Scratch as others have also said

the system crafters youtube channel and the mastering emacs book are solid choices if you want to start from the basics. if you want something that just works out of the box, i also recommend to check doom emacs (it is a complete framework with plently of useful packages and defaults pre-configured for you)
FitPandaFu · 2022-09-03 19:14
Open emacs, type `Ctrl-h t`, after finishing that type 'Ctrl-h r`
Linuxllc · 2022-09-03 19:51
I just use these two guides and ran with emacs. http://xahlee.info/emacs/emacs/emacs_basics.html https://www.youtube.com/user/jekor/videos That first link. After you get to the bottom page it reads; Congratulations! You are now a Emacs Master! The youtube videos are great to know how to customize emacs.
pudentia · 2022-09-03 20:04
I take this is an understatement?
pudentia · 2022-09-03 20:05
Avoid System Crafters in my opinion and other YouTube channels. You won't learn Emacs that way.
-1Mbps · 2022-09-03 20:06
All other comments are just making things complicated, i would advice you to download doom emacs and watch the distrotube's Emacs tuts, and then after getting familiar to that you start exploring the M-x command and then explore the config file by googling things, once you get a hang of it, delete doom Emacs and start with pure Emacs, that's how I learned Emacs and customized with my preference, and also dont forget to explore packages and stuff like that.
pudentia · 2022-09-03 20:06
Two excellent recommendations.
anaumann · 2022-09-03 20:12
It's one of the few channels that take you on a guided tour through emacs.. There's not that many around. Personally, I don't find it too attractive, but it's there, it's visual and (so I hope) easy to grasp or at least enough to get people trying.. I think, there is quite a gap between what people see seasoned emacs users do and how long it takes to get there on your own... Some more, paedagogically treated content would help a lot with people trying to get into the emacs ecosystem.. But that's just my opinion :)
pudentia · 2022-09-03 20:19
I appreciate your thoughts.
Linuxllc · 2022-09-03 20:29
Thanks. I wanted to learn emacs. I did a video about it and found these links to get me to know emacs a little better. Here are my video's about it. It's been a while. https://youtu.be/k1bBfqVX3r8?t=640 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x0U1-X9TQY

When I first started I used system crafters on YouTube. Yes there's all kinds of books, but his is great cause actually shows you what's up. I really do reccomend it. I don't have enough time, as such I havent created my own personal config past the one he showed(besides extra that I join to my doom emacs config).
telenieko · 2022-09-03 22:35
I find the Emacs manual is not often cited when beginners ask for learning resources. But it is good, though the reader has to put in the effort! Other resources may be more approachable. The manual is online and built onto emacs. Also the Emacs Lisp reference is a good read when you get more comfortable with the environment. So, if you like video go to System Crafters YT channel. If you like reading go for Mastering Emacs or the Emacs Manual. There are also some good blogs out there, but you should at least get the basics from Mastering or the Manual too.

It's simply not right! Giving doom emacs to newcomers is like giving hardcore pornography to kids. This idea does also have some anachronistic and chauvinistic connotations(an allusion that emacs could just be some text editor and nothing more). It would be better for the future of mankind if people would read what the creator of gcc, the gnu licence and gnu emacs had to say about lisp.

Org mode hooked me. 100% I was looking for a good outlining system, found org mode, learned that it could export latex (which I already loved), and the deeper I got into the org mode manual, the deeper I got sucked into emacs in general. If you code, play with lsp modes and all the language specific tools. If you write check out org mode. If you find something that emacs helps you with, then figure out how to tweak it and customize it to make it yours, you’ll be hooked for life.

I would also recommend Mike Zamansky's Using Emacs series, [https://cestlaz.github.io/stories/emacs/](https://cestlaz.github.io/stories/emacs/), and also Uncle Dave's YT channel, [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDEtZ7AKmwS0\_GNJog01D2g](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDEtZ7AKmwS0_GNJog01D2g) I found both very useful in escaping my original Spacemacs ([https://www.spacemacs.org/](https://www.spacemacs.org/)) set up and creating my own literate Emacs configuration.
-1Mbps · 2022-09-04 06:30
I mean that's how I learnt Emacs, other people have other preferences you never know.
GuardianDownOhNo · 2022-09-04 06:55
As a developer… start a project, commit to using emacs, don’t sink. That’s what I did, but the commitment it is what counts. Apply it to real world work, ask how to solve real world questions, and stick with it until you figure it out. Start simple and your effort will be rewarded.

type M-x help-with-tutorial in emacs. Thank me later :)
CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-09-08 23:22
I started watching that channel a year ago to learn how to use emacs, and now my main computer is running Guix with EXWM with literate configs. I've learned more in the last year than I have the the past 10.
CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-09-08 23:22
Maybe you won't learn emacs that way, I've learned a ton from that channel.
AnugNef4 · 2022-09-11 17:09
There is an emacs tutorial in the Help menu, too.
