Have I passed the point of no return?

thebanicThot · 2022-08-31 19:34
Emacs has become my default application for IRC (erc), music (emms), organizing my workflow (org-mode), not to mention my scientific output through LaTex editing and using it for python scripting. As I have lost my ability to tolerate non emacs keybinding I write my e-mails with emacs as much as I organize my theories (org-roam). Have I passed the point of no return? Am I lost here forever? Is there something like alcoholics anonymous for like fated people?

If you're not using EXWM, there's still hope. That's the hard stuff. Between my split ergo keyboard, portrait orientation monitor, and EXWM setup, I've rendered myself incapable of using any other computer. I ineptly scrabble at the keyboard, uncomprehending, nothing working remotely how it ought.
anerisgreat · 2022-08-31 20:23
Don't listen to them. Use EXWM. JOIN USS EMBRACEE THE EMACS. LOVE ITT. Seriously though, I fell hard. EXWM and everything. At work we need to use Windows, so I just installed emacs and do as much as I can from there (though no one understands what I don't like about PyCharm)
HM0880 · 2022-08-31 20:43
> nothing working how it ought Isn't that the sad truth with a customized setup??? :D
timmymayes · 2022-08-31 22:06
Which split ergo? Made myself a dactyl-manuform and there is no going back for me.
ieure · 2022-08-31 22:11
Ergodox, I recently got one of the nice wireless versions. I've admired the dactyl, and might build one some day.
timmymayes · 2022-08-31 22:39
I started with an ergodox infinity. It was nice but I broke the usb C connector as I took it to and from the office so plug in and out wore it down. Once I moved to the dactyl though I prefer it so much. It's also really nice to know I can hand make my own keyboards when I want. I plan to do a custom design at some point. I want to arch the outside bottom section of the board down a tad to fascilitate a slightly angled 1.5u size keycap for my ctrl keys, essentially positioning them for slightly easier palm keypresses
edumerco · 2022-08-31 23:05
You have transcended what others perceive as reality and now understand the we are all one with emacs and the biosphere. Welcome brother/sister, may you live in peace and bliss now and forever... ;D
edumerco · 2022-08-31 23:07
I am waiting for my keyboardio M100 to arrive. Only my 50's birthday present of a e-bike made me more nervous... ;DDD
artyhedgehog · 2022-09-01 00:04
Well, unlless it's emacs and not vim, there's always an exit.
ppvvaa · 2022-09-01 00:39
Honest question, what do you use IRC for? I know it's for messaging, but in what context? What is it? Also, I feel like I'm going on the same path... But I'm a bongo man for music. And I'm hesitant to try email in emacs because I know there'll probably be a frustrating time trying to get it to work with Gmail. And I know nothing about the technical aspect of it, imap, etc.

Always. And a doctor too, in case you feel the need.

I was going to say the phrase "over the event horizon" seems appropriate.
sch0lars · 2022-09-01 05:05
Haven’t used IRC in about 10 years, but I‘ve heard Discord is the modern day equivalent – though I’ve never used it. It’s pretty much a messaging system for group chats (but you could do one-on-one messaging as well). I wasn’t even aware it was still alive.
flexibeast · 2022-09-01 05:20
> Honest question, what do you use IRC for? I know it's for messaging, but in what context? What is it? Not the OP, but in my own case, i use it to engage on IRC channels such as #emacs on libera.chat ([background](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/nl70vo/emacs_is_on_liberachat/)) or any of [the Gentoo IRC channels](https://www.gentoo.org/get-involved/irc-channels/). [IRC (Wikipedia link)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat) is a decentralised, non-proprietary chat protocol that has been around since the late 80s, which doesn't lock you into using one provider and/or client to access it, which allows you to set up your own servers, and which is [still being developed and updated](https://ircv3.net/irc/).
flexibeast · 2022-09-01 05:27
It's *very* alive. :-) When [the drama with Freenode happened last year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freenode#Ownership_change_and_conflict), over a thousand projects left (often going to libera.chat) - this included the IRC channels of major projects like Gentoo, Alpine, Haskell, Perl and Emacs. :-) i imagine there certainly wouldn't have been as much controversy had IRC been a dead communication medium for these projects.
dewyke · 2022-09-01 07:00
I use mu4e for my email. It’s brilliant. Gmail is quirky mostly on the IMAP implementation side, but it’s common and pretty well documented. I use isync (mbsync) to actually sync the mail, and mu4e to read it. About the only thing it doesn’t do as well as I would like is calendar integration.
XCapitan_1 · 2022-09-01 07:07
It's not that you had passed the point of no return. You just found the best tool for all these tasks :)
thebanicThot · 2022-09-01 07:28
>Honest question, what do you use IRC for? I know it's for messaging, but in what context? What is it? To make things worse I am member of the local hackerspace and IRC happens to be our main channel of communication.
thebanicThot · 2022-09-01 07:30
Your are in too deep. I used gentoo for some time but ran into real life problems. When telling her for the x-th time that I just need to compile something and then we could go out my GF made me choose between her and gentoo. I had to make compromises, now I am on Arch. Ever since they removed the ABS I have not even a methadon program for my personal compilation dependency.
Schievel1 · 2022-09-01 10:53
I did the same. Programming embedded with Arm Keil IDE, it’s horrible. But WSL2 with Emacs over an xserver does a good job, it’s pretty fast.
Schievel1 · 2022-09-01 10:56
I wrote a guide for the one with a track ball. I know you won’t be using the trackball much in emacs, but because of this there is a fair chance you can get rid of the mouse altogether https://github.com/Schievel1/dactyl_manuform_r_track
zixx999 · 2022-09-01 13:15
Lmao set up a cron job to compile at night or just do "emerge --update && systemctl poweroff" ya ain't gotta babysit
stayclassytally · 2022-09-01 14:43
Are you me? Seriously though I love my “integrated computing environment”.
technomancy · 2022-09-01 15:53
You hold the scroll down key in the browser and it opens seventeen new windows, despite opening a new window not being a thing I've ever wanted to do ONCE in the past DECADE but whatever, I guess this is just how browsers work now. I'm terrified of the day when wayland takes over and I have to give up exwm. I just don't think I could handle it.
technomancy · 2022-09-01 15:54
We will add your technological and biological distinctiveness to our own. Uh, that came out wrong... welcome??
technomancy · 2022-09-01 15:55
I've been on freenode/libera since 2004 or so and the #emacs channel is just one of the most chill places to hang out. People are helpful when you have an emacs question but otherwise I enjoy the jokes and commentary.
drobilla · 2022-09-01 17:02
One of us! One of us!
ieure · 2022-09-01 17:52
I love it, too. The closest thing one can get to a modern Lisp Machine, though it's a pale imitation in so many ways.
bitwize · 2022-09-01 18:05
Emacs is the king of editors, and damn near the king of *ways to compute*. With the outside world thinking they can reinvent the UI wheel, take comfort in the fact that most Emacs apps work pretty much the way you're used to, and if even that fails you, you can program them yourself.
Pay08 · 2022-09-01 18:34
Use `;` instead of `&&`, that way the computer will turn off even if the update failed.
Pay08 · 2022-09-01 19:10
Does mu4e support multiple email addresses?
zixx999 · 2022-09-01 20:08
Ayyy thanks
HM0880 · 2022-09-01 20:41
Yep, and good luck rebinding any command in a browser; such bad design. Wayland does not support exwm? I did not know.
technomancy · 2022-09-01 20:46
it's actually in some ways almost worse than that. browsers *will* let you rebind many of the commands (you have to trust a 3rd-party extension to do it, which is terrible, but whatever) BUT they specifically ban extensions from overriding C-p and C-n (the two most important keys) for "security reasons".
dewyke · 2022-09-01 21:18
It does. Both multiple addresses on the one account and multiple account contexts. Have a look at https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/mu4e/index.html
HM0880 · 2022-09-01 23:34
Oh, now that you mention it, I think I tried rebinding C-n once and got the security error. Do you know what the claimed "security reasons" are?
technomancy · 2022-09-02 00:08
in theory, an extension could capture the C-n binding and put up a fake new window within an existing window and use that to trick the user into entering banking details or whatever. in practice if you've already installed a hostile extension that should be the least of your worries, and who opens new windows on purpose nowadays anyway? plus it would be extremely unconvincing to anyone using a tiled WM to see a fake browser window that sits inside an existing browser window. tl;dr non-tiling-wm-users have ruined web browsers for the rest of us.
HM0880 · 2022-09-02 01:08
Ah, the C-n case sort of makes sense... but C-p? What could be malicious about printing? (Maybe I don't want to know.) Have you tried the Nyxt browser? I spent an afternoon with it, and it seemed great, but I didn't want to start tweaking another config... my Emacs `init.el` is enough for one lifetime.
technomancy · 2022-09-02 14:59
I've tried qutebrowser and some similar ones. Lack of ublock origin is nearly as bad as lack of emacs key bindings. Plus I'm not quite ready to admit defeat and give in to the browser engine monopoly yet.
